Live. Laugh. Luge.

I have put together a little entertainment on @aq.sb by running a little text based email for myself.

It's not open to the outside world (except, obviously, incoming and outgoing email). I'm using SynchroNet and MXGuarddog – the Postini Alternative.

In the spirit of Spring Cleaning and the shut-in effect of the quarantine kicking in hard, I decided to do a few things.

It started off with cleaning out the air conditioner (spoiler : never do this) and it ended with a plan on securing up my domains.

Having had mmn.on.ca since the late 90s, spammers do try and forge the domain. Granted since 2018 I've had the DMARC policy set to quarantine (lol) and it seemed to have helped from seeing the DMARC reports but with all this COVID-19 SPAM I decided to do my part to prevent bullshit from propagating (and no, no matter what Karen from YouTube says, 5G does not propagate or cause COVID-19.)

I have my next set of core domains to be set to the reject policy very soon.

Right now mmn.on.ca has a pretty good score on deliverability on internet.nl at 87% (not having IPv6 mail servers does kick you down a bit, and ProtonMail hasn't yet phased out some of the older TLS stock.

Previously I wasn't able to have DNSSEC with my previous and long time registrar MyID.ca so I had to move it to a new one not long ago so I could implement that. I've also got to reimplement HSTS, but that's a job for another day.

What wonderful news, I can hear my inner 17-year-old self say. After losing my personal domain nrg-online.ca back in the early 2000s to the horrid Michael “Mikey” Yack from FerberleursSabings.com I managed to get it back.

Granted it took many years, but it's the principle of it all. What do I plan on doing with it ? No idea, maybe make a homage to how much I detest Mikey Yack, but I already did that for a while on mmn.on.ca.

While it's not a massive victory, by literally any stretch of the imagination, it's kind of the same feeling I got when I managed to get MrMan.NET on a domain auction from Dynadot in 2014.

Let's see all the old accounts I still have attached to my old email address now...

I remembered when writing my domains page under the domains4sale part, that I needed an example of general assholery so I reached back into my mind and remembered that guy. Mikey Yack.

I still hate this guy, back when I was in school I ran a personal website when it was kind of cool. And I got to a point where I could no longer afford the registration of my domain nrg-online.ca.

Well, Mikey Yack attacked and hoarded it for many years. In fact, much like China, I outwaited that prick and I have it back now.

Ever since then, I can't stand domain douches like that. Yeah nobody is going to pay 15k for myawesomenamelol1236356462.com. Get real.

I have other domains that I share via the FreeDNS Project.

No. I'm not a domain hoarder claiming to be some kind of name guru or other bullshit like that. Some domains I share on FreeDNS some I use for my own projects where it's not always possible to share them (security reasons, web apps that need cloudflare, etc). One thing I can promise is that you won't see one of these on one of my domains :

Because this is what assholes do, a lot of assholes.

BBS

MMN is an online BBS running in Toronto since 1996, just before the internet became massive, we currently offer free email, USENET, file downloads and external IRC, FTP and Telnet to our verified users.

Image

You can dial in to the BBS on (416) 548-4117 or via telnet dial.bbs.ec (port 23) a web based client is also available at https://bbs.ec/connect/web-telnet/.

If you’re running Windows XP or less (or have compatability to do so) you can also use wcNavigator.

Groups.io

Some of our local conferences are mirrored to our mailling lists at groups.io, you can check them out here :

Gopher

There is a gopher server, you may find it at gopher.is on port 70 using your favourite Gopher client.

gopher.is

The Gopher server doesn’t have web access, so if you be tryin’ to http on gopher.is it’s not going to work out well :D

If you don’t have a Gopher client, no sweat Chet, use Floodgap’s Gopher Proxy.

Want to setup your own Gopher server, check out the guide from prgmr.com.

The Palace

I run a newly rebooted Palace server along side the BBS, it's not much to see right now, not going to lie.

To connect to The Palace server, use mmn.thepalace.network port 9998.

If you're interested in running a Palace server on your own, you can find the downloads at ftp.ec.je or via the BBS in File Area 3 – General utilities.

Please read the file description for the info you need to get setup :)

There are things I'm forced to write about online and it transpires I am just one of those many things.

As always I barely know where to start, so I guess I'll start at the beginning. I was born in Toronto and continued to go to school there (as one generally does). I started to build my own interest in computers through my poorly funded state provided education, where the school board could only afford Commodores and Apple ]['s. I spent a lot of time playing, working and pissing about with them.

To the point where, when the school was going to bin them I got first grabs at having my own C64 (hey they offered!). I eventually managed to upgrade to a machine with Windows in 1994/1995 and an Apple Classic. During these days I started to find out about BBSes and that darn fangled internet.

I downloaded my own board software and it started from there, MMN was born in 1996.

Years passed on and I continued to work on this project ever since. During my life, I decided to move countries back in 2002 to Bristol (UK). I stayed there until 2013 when I lived my dream and moved to Paris.

I've been here ever since and I'm probably never going to leave. Because you know, Paris.

I'm not only passionate about classic computing, but ironically enough learning/speaking French (I think I can thank my québécoise grade 6 teacher for that) and cycling. I enjoy techno/hardcore music and was pretty much the only person in school who was in to Dance before it became the mainstream pop shit we all know and want to burn.

Then I registered aq.sb, I found that the Antarctic has it's down ccTLD and .aq seemed cool, so I grabbed a domain similar and there you go.
