You don't want the family to feel cramped during their trip, do you? It definitely takes away from the enjoyment. You should make arrangements to book your rental van well in advance, and do research on the rental company and all the requirements for pickup and drop-off. If you're planning to bring all your luggage with you in the van, look into rental companies that will allow you to make a one-way trip (thus letting you drop off the van at the end of your road trip, without having to drive it back from where it originated). Consider where you plan on flying in and flying out of the country.

2. Always keep safety in mind

Ensure that you spend a lot of time talking about your trip and all the plans involved before your family embarks for France. Find out all about traveling and driving in France. Also, remember it's better not to do any driving on your first day (or even the second) in the country. You need to have some rest and relaxation first and get yourself oriented. The last thing you want to do is drive tired. Figure out how many hours of each day you feel that you can drive safely, and decide on places you will probably need to stop and stay along the way. Find out about the hotels in each stop, and look into how far in advance you have to make reservations. Also make sure you're aware of any travel advisory that may be in effect.

3. Plan to immerse your family in the full cultural experience

Depending on how much time you have before you travel to France, try to encourage your family to learn some French phrases and learn about French culture. At the very least, everyone should learn some basic, everyday French phrases that travelers often find very useful.
