What to See & Do During a Weekend in Houston Houston is a large city in Texas that hasn’t always been known for anything other than large portions of food. Lately, Houston has gained notoriety for a lot more than beef! After hopping in your rental car from Houston Airport, you will find museums, restaurants, exciting bars, animals, NASA, the arts...the list goes on with exciting things to see and do during a weekend in Houston.

BBQ

If you happen to be visiting Texas specifically for the BBQ, or if you are just a huge fan of meats cooked over an open flame, there are a few very impressive restaurants to check out. Houston has two spots that have made the Texas Monthly Top 10 List. These restaurants include Chocolate Craftory which has an amazing USDA Prime brisket and amazing short ribs only available on Saturdays. If you haven’t had enough you can head over to Corkscrew BBQ which carries blackened brisket and is made specifically to order. Can’t head to Houston without trying some BBQ.

Space Center Houston

Take a trip to NASA’s astronaut training and flight control complex. Houston’s famous space center is one of the top space learning and science facilities in the world. This is a non-profit organization where you can learn all about NASA and space.

Spa day at the Marriott Marquis

Head to the Marriot Marquis of Houston for a spa day and appreciate the privilege of swimming in a Texas shaped lazy river! The trick to swimming without staying at the hotel is by booking a massage or facial in the hotel spa. This will grant you access to the pool areas.

Museum of Fine Arts

One of the largest museums in the United States belongs to Houston, it is the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. This museum boasts art from the Renaissance, to African sculptures, films, a sculpture garden and more. Plus, each Thursday there is free admission and a DJ along with food trucks and a happy hour from 6-8pm.

Breakfast Tacos

Being close to the border of Mexico has its perks concerning gastronomy. There are various restaurants offering incredible tacos that are offered during breakfast time. Some favorites are Chilosos Tacos House, Laredo Taqueria and Villa Arcos. Be prepared to spend $7-$15 per person and hobble out the door with your belt unbuckled an extra notch.

Fine Dining

A surprise for many on the opposite end of the spectrum from cheap tacos, is the extensive amount of fine dining restaurants found in Houston. If you can’t make a trip to L.A, NYC or Hong Kong Houston is the best place to have an experience at Nobu. If a steak is more up your alley check out Doris Metropolitan for a trendy steakhouse experience that even includes a chandelier-lit meat locker. If you are ready to spend a pretty penny then head to one of these fine dining establishments where you will be not be dissapointed.

Turtle races

For the gambler in the group head to the turtle races in midtown and bet on your favorite shelled racer. During Houston’s spring and summer at Little Woodrow’s Midtown you can buy a beer and cheer! For a unique experience different than the normal horse race or sports show this can be a blast.

Street art

For the instagrammer, or street art aficionado spend a few hours in the day viewing Houston’s street art. A few murals to check out include “Houston is…” in Market Square, the We ‘heart’ Houston Sign which are over 10 foot tall letters in Bagby Park, “Synchronicity of Color,” which is located in the Art Blocks in Discovery Green in downtown Houston, TX. Anyone can get lost looking at this incredible works of art, and if you have children with you they will be sure to love taking photos to post for their friends to see back home.

Houston is an interesting city filled with many different types of food, various forms of art, and an incredible opportunity to learn about NASA. It is worth a weekend trip to experience all of this with a side of Southern Hospitality.
