tw // mentions of domestic violence

It’s during times like this, Hifumi strongly wished he could fly. Hifumi has seen his parents fight countless times, and he’s beyond tired. He has heard them snapping at each other enough, their voices piercing right through his ears. His dad would beat his mom, and he could hear how she cried begging for mercy. Sometimes, his big sister would step in, then take him away somewhere, but being a busy college student she is, she’s away most of the time. Working on her papers, having fun with her friends, or whichever it is—he doesn’t care enough to ask for details. It’s a wonder they haven’t divorced yet when their relationship is already beyond irreparable.

Hifumi is exhausted.

He just wants to get it over with, escape from this hell, and fly away somewhere. He seeks freedom. And during times like this, Hifumi is glad to have Doppo in his life. Doppo never seemed all that enthusiastic whenever they’re talking, but for as long as he could remember, the red-headed boy has always provided shelter for him.

Today, too, with his tiny legs, he climbed the tree in front of Doppo’s room, and knocked on his window a few times softly. He could hear Doppo shuffling around; grumbling and dragging his feet lazily, but there he is, opening the window for him like he always did, ushering him to get in. “Hurry up. It’s cold.”

It’s 3 AM, no wonder Doppo is trembling from how cold it is.

Hifumi, however, doesn’t feel cold in the slightest. He feels warm. The way Doppo still opened his window and let him in when it’s freaking 3 AM, and he’s supposedly asleep, fills him with warmth.

“I’m coming in, Doppo-chin!”

Hifumi might not be a bird who can fly wherever he wants to, but he does have a place to return. A place that gives him the warmth and affection his family lacked, something that he is infinitely grateful for.
