HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK OF ADVENT

THEME: CHANGE OF MIND.

Sometimes we think it is too late to change our minds for the better; or too late to change direction, open a new chapter, or start afresh in life. Jesus asked the chief priests and elders about their opinion concerning a man and his two sons.

The man asked the first to go and work in the vineyard, and the son bluntly refused. Later on, he repented and went; the man also asked the second to go to the vineyard and work, and, after promising to go, the son did not go.

Jesus asked them, “Which of the two did the will of his father?” They answered, “The first.” Jesus said to them, Tax Collectors and sinners who have been relegated to the background among the Jews may end up going into the kingdom of God first because they repented of their evil ways. And people who take repentance for granted, including religious leaders, may be left behind because they refused to believe or change for the better.

One negative attitude we need to address in our lives is paying lip service or promising to do something and failing to do it. God keeps the promises he makes to us, but we are constantly failing to keep the promises we made to God. As we prepare for Christmas, can we imitate the virtue of the first son, who changed his mind for the better?
