Graphite #5: Michelangelo's David

Whenever I was drawing with a reference or a model I always followed the mantra: “Draw what you see.” In fact I really put a lot of effort in it to be really precise. But it is not about drawing what you see. It is about drawing what you know. So with this paradigm shift I started from scratch and read a lot of theoretical texts and articles about gesture drawing. Yes, I even bought a whole book about artistic anatomy. And still it is a craft which takes years and decades to master. The author of this book says that the best living artist for human anatomy right now is still worse than the worst master in this book. He thinks human anatomy is a craft which is getting lost (I will tell you more details about the book in my videos).

Anyway, I also started the 30-days trial period on https://www.proko.com/. That was helpful! After I learned some lessons I felt like I am ready to put my new skills into use. First I was using my sketchbook to do gesture drawings and torso shadings. Watch what I did there in my first video of this article (btw.: In the video I made the first torso only in double speed so you can follow better. The rest is in the usual fast forward).

But before we start: This piece is just one step on my way of mastering art. I change the media and I want to be able to create different styles of art pieces. Follow me on my journey here on Coil, Cinnamon and on Twitter:

Here is my first video about torso drawings:

After that I started to draw one of the most famous statues. David from David and Goliath made by Michelangelo.

This is not it! I followed up with two livestreams:

And here is the result!

Hope you enjoyed it!
