Testing Write.As Markdown

Newlines

I'm used to pandoc's markdown and there are some discrepancies with write.as that annoys me.

In pandoc's markdown, a single block of text is treated as a paragraph. Newlines are ignored. This is not the case with write.as markdown: a newline becomes a newline.

To create a newline in pandoc's markdown, you have to end a line with two spaces. In write.as markdown, this yields two newlines:

This is the first line␣␣
this is the second line

This is the first line
this is the second line.

The same thing happens in block quotes:

> This is the first line␣␣
> this is the second line.

This is the first line
this is the second line.

It seems that write.as markdown use both newlines and double spaces at the end of a line. I would expect it to use only one of those — and preferrably the double space variant.
