Crypto. It's a fascinating world filled with hope, technology, despair, ups and downs, everything. People of all walks of life have come into this space, wanting to make a quick buck. And that's fine. It's a normal human reaction.

When I first heard of the coin that started it all, I was extremely skeptical. I had some close friends (who were far more aware of the technical aspects of it all than I was) introduce me to Bitcoin around early 2017. To them, this was the answer to all of their problems.

Hate banks? Well shoot, look at this cryptocurrency right here! You take control of your hard earned cash, not some giant banking corporation.

Feeling poor? Well chucks! Just look at these self-made Bitcoin millionares! If they could do it, then surely you should be able to as well, right?

And so this fantasy was born. With minimal effort, one could buy some Bitcoin (or your altcoin of choice if you even knew of any) and then you'd finally be “invested” in a technology that had the potentional to make you not hundreds, but millions of dollars. It's a dream for those in iffy financial situations.

And, me being your typical broke college student, started to fantazise with them.

At the time, the price of Bitcoin was somewhere around the $2000 mark if memory serves me right, and while I wanted to pour money into this sort of thing, I couldn't really spare much. And only owning 0.00X amount of a coin just didn't sit right with me. So I skipped it. One of my buddies would later buy a small amount, but cashed out only weeks before the big bang we had in late 2017. Sure enough, he was pissed.

At that point I had already forgotten about crypto in general. It wasn't until I started hearing headlines about Bitcoin roaring past $10,000 that I started to pay attention again.

Now I really wanted in, but still being stuck in the college life, I had no chance whatsoever. So I did what most people do:

I looked for alternatives.

Now, at this point, I did not care for the technology behind crypto. Sure, I agreed with others on the fact that banks in general are quite crappy, and that having a crypto currency that was separated from that system would be beneficial. No one could deny that. But in reality all I cared about was making some cash.

And so I looked at some other coins. And what I found was an enormous, endless sea of cryptocurrencies. All of which, in my mind, had potential to become huge.

But there was this one coin in particular that caught my eyes. One that would not only change the way I view cryptocurrencies in general, but the whole financial sector as well:

Ripple's XRP.
