School Lunches
So, out of boredom I picked up my Oakville Call newspaper that i got in the mail today & the front page story was about a pilot program that was being extended that offered universal free breakfast to students at....some elementary school. And they say that the kids are eating more, test scores are going up, etc etc. They said there was certain stigmatism w/ the students who, prior to this program, had to use a reduced price meal card or whathaveyou. So, it seems to me like the pilot program is a success and it looked like they were going to extend it. Sounds good.
But that is not what this blog post is about. After reading the article in the Oakville Call, i decided to do a YT search of “school lunch documentary”. What i saw was an ABC News special report about how a school (1-12 grade) was decreasing their portion sizes in the students meals and offering more “healthy” foods, in which the students revolted, threw away a bunch of stuff, and made viral YT videos about the lack of nourishment at their educational facilities. Now, you can call me a cynical bastard all you want, but i have absolutely no doubt that this wasn't some sort of cost-cutting measure by the administrators at this school. Less calories means the less food you have to serve, yes? So why not slap a “combating childhood obesity” sticker on it and save some moolah and look good at the same time.
I have a better suggestion: how about one out of the seven classes students are forced to attend daily be a nutritional studies class from the first grade level all the way to level 12 and have that nutritional education reflected in the fare in the cafeteria? Wouldn't that be a hell of a lot better of a solution than forcing a kid to get a small serving of brocoli and a (concentrate) fruit juice instead of a soda? The answer to the childhood obesity problem is the same answer parents, administrators, government, and students will come across again and again: the answer is to e.d.u.c.a.t.e. the gd kids and show them that they have to eat nourishing, healthy (and satisfying) foods. No kid want to eat a non-organic Dole brand fucking salad w/ some watery dressing, nor do they want to eat sloppy joes three days out of the week that is boiled in some trough w/ 20 gallons of BBQ sauce. Put some effort and energy into carefully preparing organic, flavorful, and ethically-made food that is BOTH healthy and satisfying. Just....try that. See what happens. I guran-fucking-tee it will work.
today has been a slow but beautiful day. warm outside (unseasonal) & just relaxing & checking in on the Discussion Area on Gale Courses to see who is saying what, etc. Tomorrow, Lesson #2 begins :)
idk if i mentioned this already, but i requested The Federalist Papers (a book) from SLCL and when it comes in, i will head down there to pick it up and actually RETURN IT when i am finished with it so i do not rack up any late fees. Haha. I was going to get On War by Carl von Clausewitz but for some reason none of the SLCL branches had it. Wasn't even in the directory. Weird. Pretty major book from what i understand. Nevertheless, i will read it one day even if i have to buy the physical copy. I found these two books (even tho i already knew of TFP) through Goodreads. I rated a bunch of books i have read on there as well as made a small reading list of books i want to read. I signed up for Goodreads because someone on Twitter was doing a giveaway of 10 copies of her book & i always respected this journalist/now author so I wanted to get a copy (despite the book material itself not really being up my alley). If i don't “win” a copy, i will certainly buy a copy at one point or another. I credit this person for outlining (in terrific detail) how to write a journo pitch on her Tumblr as a response to an anonymous question some years ago. I still remember that post very well, and i have since thanked this journalist/author since then for the great advice (even though it was to another person, haha).
Anyway, I need to finish up reading Fight Club in a little bit and then i will be ready for The Federalist Papers (about 178 pages, if i am not mistaken).
Time for Fight Club!

Aaaaaand, Laundry: DONE!
i also texted the mom and checked-in on dad and he is resting. he has a wound-vac, which sucks out infection/helps with the healing. Sounds like it would do the OPPOSITE of heal a wound, but i would be wrong about that. He is in good spirits though.
i am assuming we are going to go up there Saturday (SPD) because we're Irish and it is sort of a big holiday for us. The official SPD is the 24th. Gonna be fun.
I also need to buy a notebook. More on that later.
I have no other “special” plans for the day other than just enjoying the nice weather. May find something to read a little bit later on. idk. I need to make a “Mind Map”. I will do that now. :)

Lesson #1: DONE!
So i read through all the intro material of the “Writer's Research Methodologies” course and took the first lesson & the first 5-question quiz (100%!) and introduced myself in the Discussion Area, & all is good!
Lesson #2 is tomorrow
i am having trouble typing today for some reason. haha. Anyway, i am p happy right now. I also got a Patagonia catalog in the mail (yesterday) that i just fetched from the mailbox and i am going to read through that a little later.
I cancelled the appt i had today downtown and am going t reschedule it. I am going to do laundry a little bit later on.

delicious breakfast
i had a baby spinach salad w/ mango salsa (mangos, cucumbers, red onion, cilantro) and southwest chipotle sauce. i have a lot saved for later, too (all said incredients separated). i will not even have to “try” to eat healthy today because all of the food in the house is vegetable-based (& like always, 100% vegetarian :))
speaking of which; it is going to be four years being vegetarian in August, but that is still some months away, so, yeah. It's cool.
today is going to be all about e-courses (online classes) and laundry. i am going to call & cancel the appt for Metro Call-A-Ride & make up some BS excuse bc i am way-the-fuck too busy to go all the way downtown for a meeting and also i do not want to take my life in my own hands by visiting downtown St Louis (an extremely dangerous city). I am surprised i lived there for 13 months. lol.
today is going to be 64 degrees & sunny so i am looking forward to it. good times

mucho gusto this evening, friends. mucho gusto.
i had fried spuds w/ onion and spicy brown mustard just now & i am feeling v satisfied. tis a good (& somewhat late) night w/ nothing to do but a quick check-in w/ the e-course a little bit later on. I was busy af (waiting) all day, so i have not been able to check it. #soon
anyway, be back in a bit!
home sweet home after a long day
dad had surgery today and i actually SAW his foot afterwards (i haven't had a chance to see it, yet), & it looks rough, but not as bad as i imagined it, tbh. it was a long day of waiting but at the end of the day, the surgery was (sorta) a success. still need a wound vac on it (which they started today). Crazy.
Now i am sitting at home having a Monster & watching a YT video & finding shit to do online. Finally resting and NOT waiting!

Nada damn thing to do tonight but write and tweet, it seems like. No big deal.
Yahoo acct has been compromised
i kept getting 2FA notifications / texts with PIN numbers earlier today bc someone guessing the OLD password to my Yahoo acct. Good fo them. I changed all my passwords to random things not long ago & wrote all of them down offline. So, fuck whoever is trying to get into my acct. #cocksuckers
anyway, i am sitting here late into the night after having had a late night snack when i heard that Stephen Hawking died which is a huge bummer bc he was probably the smartest man to have ever lived. Truly brilliant.
Anyway, on another note; i am thinking that i may only need the BlackBerry ID to sign-in to a BB10 OS phone and if that is the case, then that is a v good thing. Twitter, write.as, services like that; they are all tied into my phone number (which is the way all things should be).
With that said; i am going to go off e-mail at some point in the future. After my 6-week course(s) are finished, i will have v little use for an e-mail acct and i may flat-out cancel the ones i have. They can be convenient, but Gmail is invasive to say the least (Google ADMITS to reading your e-mails, and ppl go along with it bc they are dumb). ProtonMail is safe, secure, non-invasive, etc. BUT, it only works on certain browsers, so....scratch that. Instead i will just do what a lot of ppl are doing and not USE e-mail. Fuck it. Easy.

BlackBerry-fication / DeGoogle-fication
OK, so since i am using an Android phone, i realize i am not DeGoogle-fied, yet. I am more or less “practicing” w/ apps that are native on BB10 OS & making the MOto X into like a DTEK 50 (of sorts) which i have done before, but this is more permanent. That is, until next month when i go back to BB10 for everything w/ a BlackBerry Q10.
I just wrote a blog post on here that describes the browser/ProtonMail situation, and i will find a workaround, but for the time being, i am investing more into the BB ecosystem.
Why BB10 OS? Isn't iOS secure as well?
Yes. iOS is secure. Not necessarily “more” secure than BB10 OS (in some ways it is, in some ways it isn't), but, iOS will not let you download anything from the internet.NOTHING can be downloaded from outside the “Walled Garden”. I went through this horseshit with my iPhone 5 back in 2013 and was appalled when i found out that this is how Apple operates their mobile platform. It's batshit & ridiculous. BB10 OS serves my purposes much better.
But this isn't about Apple. I haven't used any of their products for years, so, back to why I am DeGoogle'ing. Because they are most definitely the “big brother” of the tech industry & they have way, Way, WAY too much power in the world. Everyone knows this. It is a matter of principle, for me.
So, i have to get used to all this & find a work-around for ProtonMail (as i am def commited to that service) so, i will update when i have found a solution. :)
