Don't listen to God's voice

I've seen it. I've seen people that think to hear God's voice and they take it seriously. They destroy other people's lives. In evangelical denominations it's quite common that the leaders emphasize hearing God's voice and they even encourage people to do it.
I'm telling you now: don't go down that rabbit hole.
The examples from the past of people that were following visions or did what God told them to do caused enormous damage to millions of people.
I don't believe God speaks to people. But I believe that God could speak to people: it's not the ability that is missing.
If you start following a voice inside your head then you stop to think for yourself and that's a serious issue. It doesn't surprise me that many of these people that “hear God's voice” are part of communities where thinking is discouraged.
In my opinion God wants us to use our brains to figure things out. He may give us hints to help us but he refrains from making it explicit to avoid danger.
For how would you know if that voice is really God or not? It could be anything. And once you start to follow such a voice then you have given up your common sense and you will drag other people into the madness.
The same thing goes for divination which is just as dangerous. I believe if God gives a hint it will come in a way that does not involve speculation. If you want do know what to decide, there probably already has been something to point you into the right direction.
If you need to ask God trying to figure things out based on a voice in your head or signs from heaven, you'd better go back to your reason and use that...
