Celebrate Small Business Month

October is Small Business Month, and given the pandemic and all that small businesses are facing right now, things are looking much different this year. In general, it's a month filled with networking events and trade shows, but even though these events are canceled this time around, that doesn't mean you can't continue to attend.

Switch to virtual mode:

While many events usually held in person have been canceled or postponed, many will be held online. You can participate in multiple virtual and digital networking events, webinars and online trade shows. It is essential for small business owners to continue to take advantage of the Month and all of the networking opportunities available to them. Even though they take place online, these activities still present opportunities to make contacts, to let people know who you are and what you do, and to form important business relationships that can help you grow.

Boost your social media

In addition to attending events online, you should also take advantage of social media to make contacts and network. Simple message exchanges on LinkedIn, Twitter or Instagram can be a great way to expand your network and gain valuable knowledge about your industry. When speaking to people online, present a short pitch that summarizes your goals (researching sales opportunities, launching a new service, finding contacts in your industry, etc.) and explain why you are both will benefit from establishing a relationship.

Share your experience

You started your business for a reason, and it's probably the one that motivates you every day. Don't make it a secret! Your unique journey might inspire others to pursue their dreams, and your passion might attract potential clients and partners. Sharing your story is also a great way to remind your customers and followers why they are supporting you.

Inform yourself

Small business owners have a vested interest in engaging, educating themselves and staying on top of new trends and developments. A good way to stay on top of industry news is to make podcasts part of your routine. While you're cleaning, cooking, or playing sports, a podcast about your industry is an easy way to learn and stay up-to-date in Business Month. This fall, open your ears and refresh your perspectives by listening to a new podcast.

Say thanks

What makes your business possible? Your team and your customers! Take a step back from your daily responsibilities and show your appreciation to your customers and employees. In-person thanks are great, but if the pandemic makes it difficult, you can always write thank you cards, send emails to those who encourage you, or express your gratitude on social media.

However you choose to celebrate Small Business Month, it's important to stay active in your industry and take advantage of networking opportunities, even if they look a little different than in other years.
