It is the gift of self. So if we apply that notion to the Trinity, you see that charity really can, to a certain extent, give us some light on those relations among the three Persons. The Father so loves the Son that He gives Himself to Him, and He gives Himself in such a way that the Son is His equal. He keeps nothing for Himself, so to speak. He stays what He is, of course; He always stays God; He always keeps all of His perfections. But in His infinite love for His Son, He engenders a Son exactly like Himself, who has all of His properties with the same infinity, the same perfection, the same eternity, because love exists to give itself, and the Father therefore gives Himself in His Son.
