RFC-229

by Darius Kazemi, August 17 2019

In 2019 I'm reading one RFC a day in chronological order starting from the very first one. More on this project here. There is a table of contents for all my RFC posts.

Eight characters are better than six

RFC-229 is titled “Standard Host Names”, authored by Jon Postel of UCLA and dated September 22, 1971.

The technical content

This RFC is Jon Postel offering up an alternative to Peggy Karp's host mnemonic table in RFC-226. Postel's table has 37 entries compared to Karp's 20, and proposes 8-letter names for sites instead of Karp's 6-letter names.
