Dear Coilers, today was a big day for my city, its citizens and the whole country.

Festival of Freedom took place on the main square of Capital of Croatia, Zagreb.

Tens of thousands of people gathered to celebrate freedom!

Freedom to breathe, freedom to think and decide for yourself, freedom to move and go wherever you want with how many people you want.

Freedom to socialize, have friends and contact them physically. Freedom to visit elderly in seniors homes, freedom to visit children in hospitals...

Freedom to live!

Croatia was not independent for about 1000 years and the seek for freedom is incorporated in our genes. Since the independence in 1990 we do not let others take it without protesting.

Most haven’t worn masks, some have. Everyone is free to choose, Nobody to judge choices. Many known and unknown Croatians came to support the Festival. Young, old, whole families with little babies and old parents...

A speaker, among others, was one of the biggest Croatian authorities in the domain of epidemiology, immunology and vaccines, who made few good points.

Asking if healthy people should be terrorised by epidemiological measures, should all innocent people be detained to stop potential criminals among them?

Btw that is the guy who warned public that swine flu vaccine will cause autoimmune disease in 2 years timeframe. When enormous number of ALS cases occurred 2 years later he just said -“I told you!”

Nobody is denying the existence of SARS-CoV-2, but are questioning the severity of COVID-19.

More than that, people are fighting against losing of basic human rights!

There is a hope in this world. People are not that stupid. At least not all.

Wear a mask if you think it is good for you. Don’t wear it if you don’t want. Respect choices of others and share love.

We are all in the same deep sewer, don’t let the river of crap become our “New Normal” as it is not normal.

Old normal is normal!

Today I can proudly say I’m proud to be Zagrebian, I’m proud to be Croat!

Dear Coilers, is there anyone who doesn’t love photography and don’t want to get better in it? There are some pros here on coil like Adam the Aussie and Michael. Their photos, especially Adam’s staged studio photos, make you enjoy photography and push you to try to get pics of that class.

Many of you, maybe most, don’t have a pro DSLR and good lenses, not to mention studio equipment, which makes higher photo tech level possible.

But everyone has a mobile phone!

Mobile phone photography will NEVER give the results like Nikon D850 with 70-200 f2.8 lens but no equipment can choose the scene and frame it by itself!

I love taking walks thru the center of my city. Mostly observing and trying to imagine set scenes on its streets.

Sometimes I take my mobile out of the pocket and snap. The best time is the golden hour, the one before the sunset, when the Sun is low and everything is dreamy and painted in golden tones.

Every building, every wall, street, doors, people... are the scenery for your art.

Don’t be afraid of what people passing by you will think! Enjoy in every shot. Prepare it and frame it like you have all the time in this world. Disconnect yourself from the present and enter the Zen of your creativity.

Wait for the right moment to catch subjects in right position. Respecting the rule of the thirds, or any other of the artistic laws will make your work look better.

Take photos of everything and play with framing. Few details of some building will sometimes catch more interest of the viewer than if shown as a whole. It can make the viewer think about what is out of the frame and try to imagine it.

Even simple corners of buildings can be interesting.

leading lines are great, golden Sun too. Empty streets are often more interesting than those packed with cars.

Everything is possible, like the writing on the old wall says....

It is even possible to make viewers try to read the name of the street in your photo. Punch them in the eyes with it, but the punch should be subtle.

Take photos! But never forget to show them to the viewers!

Dear Coilers, today I had a situation. I went to the city center to film some scenes which I planned to cover in my Coil and Cinnamon posts to follow.

After I took my shots, I went for a coffee in a bar I usually go to when downtown.

A waiter, nice girl who works there, served me and while putting the coffee on my table, she had seen me watching clips I’ve filmed and got interested in them.

Her: WOW this looks like a movie

Me: It kind of is, it is shot with anamorphic lens in 24fps and 48shutter. I’ve used ND filter not to clip highlights...

Her: (looking at me with big❓on the top of her head) you did what?!

Me: It is just technical stuff to get cinematic look from your video.

Her: Aha, you are a filmmaker?! Can I see your camera

Me: I’m not a filmmaker. This is my camera.

Her: This is an iPhone!

Me: Yes. It has a camera. Even better, it has 3 of them.

Her: But this doesn’t look like a mobile video!

Me: It doesn’t. I told you what I did to get it look like this.

Her: Aha... and what you do with it?

Me: I post it on Cinnamon.

Her: On Cinnamon?!

Me: It is like YT but new. And better. I get payed for it!

Her: I know TikTok. So you are an influencer?

Me: God forbid! I am a content creator. I make content and publish it on Coil and Cinnamon.

Her: And you get payed for it?

Me: I do.

Her: How much?

Me: $500 – 800 – 1000 a month.

Her: So you are an influencer. I get $650 here.

Me: I’m not an influencer.

Her: Why they pay you if you are not?

Me: It’s complicated. I get micropayments for views and I get boosts which compensate the work input in the content as micropayments are still low.

Her: So that is your job?!

Me: It is not.

Her: How much time you spend on that?

Me: Few hours a day.

Her: So it definitely is a job!

Me: Hmm, when I think better, you are right. I could say it was my job...

Her: So you are like me. You are in a bar, working and getting payed for it.

Me: Haha, you are a smart girl!

Her: I study law, just working here to pay my rent.

Me: You’ll be a “hard to beat” lawyer!

Her: Oh, I will! Keep working boy, I gotta work too, guests are waiting...

She went to serve a couple which sat on a terrace and left me thinking about my “job”.

How long it takes for a post to be composed and published?

I can’t say how other creators do it, I can say for myself only, but I’m sure that all others, who do it properly, spend quite a lot of time working on it.

My Dram! and Brew! posts take about 4-6 hours to finish sometimes longer but those are still in pre production. Each one needs a research about the particular beer/whisky and brewery/distillery. Depending on how much I already know about those, it takes 1-3 hours. Tasting itself takes up to and hour, with writing the impressions down. In Dram! I film whisky review which also takes about an hour. Then comes editing... After all is done the writing comes...

Travel! posts are different as I do not calculate traveling time in it. But taking photos and videos to make a story is often annoying. I cannot relax completely as I want to take enough material for the future posts. It is even more annoying to the people who (if) travel with me. “You and your stupid recording!” is what I’ve heard soooo many times.

Photo and video editing is what takes A LOT of time! Writing a story is nothing compared to it. I guess that every minute of video takes 2 hours of work. (Ok, it can take a minute if you upload a raw, single clip video, directly from your phone but...)

There is not a single video of The Founding Fathers as we simply couldn’t afford it! – Thomas Jefferson

My textual posts like this one or my Philosophical Economics Thoughts or similar, sometimes take more than 4 hours to write. I might have a concept blooming in my head, but the final paper is something completely different.

Imagine how long it takes to find Thomas Jefferson’s quote which fits the article?!

In the end, is it payed well? For someone living in Croatia or similar undeveloped hole on the world map, Boosts are like a real salary. Sometimes even higher than the country’s average monthly salary. For those in the US not, but I’m sure it is a great addition to the monthly income.

To conclude, creating content on Coil and Cinnamon can really be called a job! It takes time to make and is payed. It is payed well! Still is.

Dear Coilers, I’ve been thinking about the topic of this post. As a fact, I’m writing my impressions out of my head right now, sitting in a bar sipping a beer...

If you ever come to the wall of your creativity, just go to a bar and the magic of it will solve all your problems.

No, it’s not about the beer nor whisky, it is about the people you meet there.

Cafe bar “Kristal” (Crystal in Croatian) is a gem, a piece of history which fights a war against modern days. Opened in early 1970s and never changed its interior, apart from the flat screen TV. Even the toilet is the original one!

Entering it you feel like you’ve come to post Woodstock years. But the patrons... OMG

Today there was D, a painter; M, construction engineer; S, a bum; S, a chronicle alcoholic (a lawyer by trade) with her husband S, ex musician; D, an idiot and taxi driver; P, a barber and Z, an agronomist, owner of the biggest plantation of one sort of fruit in Croatia.

Mister Ž, the owner, an electric engineer, in his 70s, runs the bar with his mother who is 93!!!

A pleiad of characters which guarantees incredible stories from the past. Just listening their stories, one can learn everything about everything. They do not have much interest in the present, the future even less. The past is what is keeping them alive, but the smile on their faces and their laughs out of the pure hearts tells that this past was worth living in.

Bars made me a president, not my politics! – Thomas Jefferson

All of them are here every day. Either to have a cup of coffee or few bottles of wine... it is kind of their living room.

What am I doing there (here) you ask?

Kristal, as well as Revan, a bar 50 meters down the road, is my favourite writing place. I have my corner in it, from which I can observe the situation and listen the conversations.

Separated enough to have my peace but close enough to participate in the philosophical debates and verbal fights.

M just came in, she is my friend, a sports journalist who’s father I know for years. He was a sports journalist too, retired now. He traveled with us to many of my teams away football matches to take photos and write articles for Sportske Novosti, the only daily sports newspapers in Croatia. A colourful character too.

She just asked me what am I doing, ordered me to finish soon and buy her a beer so I have to go soon

What I wanted to tell you is that if you have a lack of inspiration, do not fear to enter the obscure place like Kristal.

Enter, you might find a muse you were searching for. If you don’t find her, you always can order a beer and enjoy it. It is as much of an inspiration as the muse. If you order enough of it...

Dear Coilers, yesterday one video shook, shocked and disturbed Croatia. A video of something which is happening daily in probably every country and every place. Unfortunately.

It is a video of a bunch of young idiots bullying some boy. The video appeared online about 5 days after the situation has happened and it caused quite a few things...

Here is the video, it is disturbing but I recommend you to watch if you can:

https://cinnamon.video/watch?v=398502559255364699

Now we come to the question from the topic, is it good or bad thing that this video was published?!

IT IS ABSOLUTELY GOOD! And I’ll tell you why.

Very few moments after the video was published, it became viral and the whole country stood up and demanded fast act from the authorities.

All media were flooded with posts about it and police had to do its job.

Few hours later, two mongrels who have beaten the poor boy were arrested but the nation wanted to know everything about it.

It turned out that the police knew for this for 5 whole days and haven’t done anything untill the video was uploaded and became publicly visible. (Father of one bully works in the army and of the other works for the police, and both are members of the leading political party).

It turned out that the boy they were beating is a person with special needs who lives with his father who suffers from diabetes and are struggling thru life.

It turned out that one of the young criminals was a member of a local boxing club. Was a member, not is a member, because the very same moment the video was seen by the people from the club he was expelled.

It turned out they were offering drugs to the boy with special needs and then they asked him to pay for it. In the video, they give him 2 days to deliver them 2000HRK (US$320) which he cannot collect.

It turned out, once again, that Croats cannot tolerate injustice and some actions are initiated to raise some funds for the boy and his poor father. I have decided to make XRP wallet for him and fund it with some coins which he will be able to use when the right time comes.

If the video wasn’t published online, Croatian police wouldn’t do anything about it, as always.

There is nothing more dishonourable than being a policeman in Dalmatia County in Croatia. There even the police chiefs are known for breaking the law themselves and covering their friends, family and political party members who break it.

One more thing we learnt from it. No matter the whole country stood up to force the rotten system to do something, NOBODY came out to the streets to burn and destroy, to organize riots and robberies, to... like in the US.

Citizens’ voice, canalized thru the media and social networks was loud enough to move things.

Unfortunately, not all cases like this have a happy end.

Few months ago, few kilometres far from the place this bullying took place at, a young man, 24 years old, purchased AK47 and killed 3 drug dealers. He shot them in the street, after years of threatening and bullying his brothers and him.

The “system” knew everything but haven’t done anything to help. Helpless and desperate man is capable of anything to fight injustice...

Again, the whole country stood up to help the young man, money is collected to pay him one of the best lawyers in criminal law, he recives letters and presents in prison and, thou we all know the case won’t be dismissed, the whole nation hopes he will somehow be found not guilty. The polls showed that over 80% of Croats find him a hero, not a criminal.

Disturbing content on social media can trigger people. Many crimes were solved because there was a video of criminal acts and many criminals were recognized that way.

Thou it is very unpleasant and embarrassing for the victims, it can help ending the cause of their suffering.

We as the society have obligation to make all victims know we are here to protect them and that they must not be afraid nor ashamed to speak up.

Dear Coilers, how many of you like being right? Is there anyone who doesn’t?

I like being right too and am used to it.

I am so glad that my black predictions came true. Even worse than I publicly announced. But as I am a realist who dislikes pompous statements, my predictions are always conservative so no extremes can be expected to be heard from me.

After the wealthy Norway sunk into a recession, The United Srates released stats. GDP drop of 32,9% (revised down to 31,7) is something almost unimaginable. The strongest, biggest, greatest of the world’s economy is 1/3 down in the second quarter of 2020.

Even Englishmen couldn’t hit us as hard as this invisible enemy. – Thomas Jefferson

My small homeland, Croatia, dropped 15,1% in Q2 2020. Croatia which almost doesn’t have economy. It is like some New York’s city block.

Luckily, all Croatian governments since the independence have worked hard to destroy every trace of healthy entrepreneurship to prevent bigger drop now. “What doesn’t exist can’t be ruined” is their policy...

Q2 due to global lockdown will be the worst of the worst ever, no doubt about it. But the consequences of the lockdown will be felt for years.

GDP is the official scorecard of the economy, measuring consumer spending, business investment, government outlays and other contributors to growth.

Consumer spending is the main engine of the economy. In US in Q2 it sunk by 34.1%. Many small businesses are already closed with many more to follow. Travel and hospitality sector was practically euthanised. Hotels, restaurants and airlines were particularly hard hit.

To follow it, business investment is over 30% down too. No investments – no future growth (over the present one)

The only thing which had growth was State spending, 17,4% in the US, 0,7 in Croatia... but mostly due to financial aid to households and businesses. Money printed and burnt, not invested in future growth, just burnt to stop short term social fires.

International trade is around 50% down globally, a good indicator of our beautiful Earth being a global village in normal times only. In the times of insecurity, every country started showing the real face which is own well-being only. Nobody cares for neighbours. They can starve if our fridge is full... until it isn’t.

Sane minds knew that the globalisation isn’t anything but corporations’ marketing, which made commons feel cosmopolitan while them filling their shareholders’ pockets.

With 2/3 of the third quarter behind us, what can we expect in future?!

Q3 will show big growth, no brainer that is. The only reason is, ofcourse, the big drop in Q2. But in long term, the future of economy depends on small businesses and consumer spending. If small businesses keep closing instead of reopening, nothing good is to come.

This is the moment in which governments can make the right move. New financial aid packages should be prepared, leading in 2 directions.

First one is aid for businesses to make them feel secure and keep working or reopening and employ. That will make money go around and flow like it should, both for the consumer spending and the feeling of financial security of the employers and their employees.

Second direction of new financial aid should go to citizens. Again, to raise consumer spending but also to make people survive until new jobs are opened and generated in higher numbers.

Economy is simple, economics logical... everything is interconnected and one individual cannot live without the other.

Dear Coilers, in my last post I’ve been contemplating the future of economy which is everything but bright.

DISCLAIMER: this story/thoughts is just a fiction. A movie plot made out of the facts!

Now I want to share my thoughts about the scenarios we can meet in near future.

Have you seen that Norway has officially fallen into recession?! Hey, Norway!!! Not counting their gas and oil business in, their GDP is 8% down. It is the biggest drop since the start of their statistics Agency reporting the stats!

Norway is, for those who might not know, the western social paradise of high taxation due to high social security of its citizens and even higher standard of living. An independent kingdom, not an EU member and with its own currency, Krona.

Now imagine what others can expect...

Then there is COVID too, important asset of those in power.

Now the scenario:

Soon, when the global economy crushes, the Middle Class, which managed to survive 2008 recession (with those new who reached the Middle Class standard in the meantime) will struggle to keep their status.

Small business owners, the core of the local economy, which pumps fuel for the global one to run, are slowly closing the doors of their life projects of which them, their families and the families of their employees live off.

An example from the US is even better, many have closed their businesses due to coronavirus lockdown, and many who haven’t, are having their businesses destroyed in “peaceful” protests.

I myself have been a part of both peaceful and not so peaceful protests in 1990s. I know the cause and background of many, as well as the modus operandi behind some.

You don’t have to trust me, nor share my point of view (which is objectively observing the processes only, without taking the side) but try to contemplate the facts for 8 seconds and then trust your own sanity.

Now tell me what does inequality of police treatment in different cases has to do with rioting and robbing Gucci store in New York or burning local doughnut shop in Seattle.

Imagine that scenario in the EU, Iraqi immigrant raped and killed a girl in Wiesbaden, Germany which caused peaceful protests in Zagreb, Croatia in which the peaceful protestors have peacefully stoned and burnt half of the city center asking for processing that immigrant and banning him from seeking asylum.

Well, you’ll never watch that film in good ol’ Europe, thou the cause is real. (Susanna Maria Feldmann was a 14-year old German girl who was raped and killed on the night of 22 May 2018 in Wiesbaden by Ali Bashar Ahmad Zebari, a 21-year old asylum seeker from Iraq).

Anyway, when the Middle Class is done and becomes just a line in history books, there will be the need for physical separation of the classes. The preparation for it is called social distancing, next step is the wall.

Classes are already separated in some way. It is easily seen in big cities. There are residential neighbourhoods, there are slums...

But when the poor majority starts starving, a broad street which devides those neighbourhoods will not be enough.

But the solution is already here. Like in the Hunger games.

The Capitol of some new Panem, strongly walled and protected center of power and a home of the rich will be physically separated and guarded. But not for the protection of the elite but of those poor. At least it will be presented that way.

The most important thing will be the possibility of the poor to get the status of the citizen of The Capitol.

We all know that we all have “the same opportunity” for the success. We live on a large level playing field...

You all have the same opportunities on the level playing field! If you are rich enough to buy a ticket for the stadium the field is on. – Thomas Jefferson

Now tell me, how many people you know who have reached The Capitol from a slum? Now even harder one, how many of those you know who have been able to stay in The Capitol for 3 generations?

NO, we do NOT have the same opportunities nor we live on a level playing field.

BUT – some of the people have seen where the future is leading us, to paradise or hell. Being smart enough to know that the technology is constantly going forward, no matter some want it or not, they have started investing in digital assets believed to be that tech future.

There can be a reset, there can be the hyperinflation of Fiat, but one crypto coin will always be one crypto coin.

The ticket for The Capitol will be bought and payed for in The Coins, not some paper...

HODL!

Srdan

Dear Coilers, I’ve been reading the articles posted on Coil as well as many other in different media and it made my economist’s mind feel dizzy.

COVID-19 situation is now in its 9th month and all the measures made both the economy and people sunk to the bottom.

I have never seen so much mental problems in people, 2008 and years that followed were like a hot chocolate beverage with the finest Scottish shortbreads served with it compared to this one.

And the real problems haven’t even started yet!

Writing this in the half time of the UEFA Champions League finals, watching PSG and Bayern playing in front of empty seats, I wonder will next season be the same?!

Not because of the plandemic measures but because of the fans not being able to afford plane and match tickets to attend one of the most important sports events in the universe.

The saddest thing is that my beer is served by a woman which I know from my student years. A Master in economics brought her a bartender job after working for a multinational telecommunications company.

I’m watching it with my best friend, a doctor of veterinary medicine who works in catering food delivery at the moment. HA!

Then comes to my mind today’s article by Michael B who is thinking about relocating to Florida to fetch some contracts due to lack of work within New York area.

Imagine the fact that masters of trade have unsure financial future in New York(?!), what chance people have in the developing countries?

Riley Q knows how hard is for the music / entertainment industry workers (with baby coming soon), Patricia knows how hard is in small businesses in EU, Adam knows how hard is for foreigners in the US, Deyner how hard is for Cubans, Ken knows how hard is for the young 5 members family, Niels is worrying about his groceries bills when he starts his studies...

I could continue numbering every Coiler and would find some economy repercussions of the situation we live in.

I guess only Canadians live in paradise. Still. Until...

The winter is coming, and it will be hard. Global economy is crashing and the process is slowed by the printing of enormous amounts of money. Money injected in financial markets to cover and mask the Inevitable days which are already knocking on the door.

Unemployment rates will reach their modern history maximums. The quality of life will drop to unimaginable levels. Mental illness will take more lives than COVID thru suicide... Do you know that Africa is starving already?! Not the poor Africa but (till now) developing and prospering one! Who is next?

Let them eat cake (if they have no bread) – not Thomas Jefferson

BUT – the money has to end in some pockets, it can’t disappear. The only question is in whose pockets!

OK, we know the pockets in which the majority will end but some part will be left for the commons too.

Is Crypto the solution? Most of you reading this hope it is. I hope too. The Big Reset asks for something new. The Crypto could be The thing.

But what if it is not? Ferdi had just writen about it in his post. If you have some money spared, keep it. Cash is The God in the times of poverty.

Can Coil help?

It is already helping! Imagine countries with average monthly salary up to US$1000! Their boosts are a small fortune there. I’m sure boosts are very valuable even in the most developed countries. Be thankful if you recive it.

Next few months will tell us much more about the future, will it be black or just dark gray.

I vote black. Matte. Dark. Like the winter which is coming.

Prepare yourself!

Srdan

Dear Coilers, do you love seafood? I adore it. I can and do eat anything which comes from the sea. Even the soup cooked with sea live stones (yes, there is that thing, try it, it’s magnificent).

But one of the most delicious thing is sea urchin roe (oursin in French restaurants if you have a chance to order). That beautiful, tender, orange-yellow delicacy is royalty of seafood.

Sea urchins can be found almost everywhere but are not harvested in many places. The harvest is hard as they are still picked wild only and as it is labour intense, the price of it is very high.

Uni, as Japanese call it and serve in sushi restaurants, are sea urchins’ gonads which produce roe. There are just 5 of those strips per female sea urchin. Adult sea urchins are either male or female, with a normal sex ratio of 1:1 so only half of the units can have them which makes the harvest even harder.

They have to be eaten fresh, just like clams. Rarely they are smoked and dried or preserved. That makes them even more difficult to find thus bigger delicacy thus more pricey.

The taste? Pure class! That’s the closest description! As all that kind of “wierd” food, it is an aphrodisiac. It has a strong sea smell, it is thick, creamy, rich, and buttery in texture and has briny taste.

If I knew how gorgeous it is, I would eat sea urchin roe in Boston instead of having a tea! – Thomas Jefferson

As it is not an everyday taste and is strong and rich, it is either absolutely admired or loathed. It is also an indicator of one’s Class, like litmus paper. Royalty taste buds have that thing for its umami taste which is mostly dumbed in commons by fast food full of adjectives.

You might love it or hate it, if you have never tried it, DO IT!

BUT – is there anything more fresh than if eaten while still alive? Right out of the sea? Like this...
