Night thoughts: I ought to be sleeping but I'm not,
Worries, creeping in, about the responsibilities I've got

Some walls bear the weight of rebel art
the scrabbled lines and faded colors of dreamers
mixing paint and ink with cement and brick
here, a crooked object, a jagged entry; There, a crazy sign
Run your fingers along the rough, where beautiful fades into time

Zig zag tracks pull you up, then drop you back, where
East breathes the Atlantic, and West, the Pacific
these oceans always beyond a point of view
Settle yourself upon the arch of the middle,
resting a gaze above and beyond the Mississippi
— inspired by #nwp Write Across America and the Prairie Lands Writing Project (Gateway Arch)
In a corner of the archives of the National Museum of Toys,
the kids who've come to play today ignore the signs (for girls as well as boys)
Instead, they tinker into the quiet of the collection, turning play to joyful noise

... I could play a thing I'd been hearing. It came alive. – Charlie Parker
A jazz sculptor – like this - takes an intricate idea – like that - plays a melodic riff – like this - makes the air dance – like that - sends the vibration – like that - sound to your ear – like this - something you feel – like that - something you hear – like this

Roll out, friends, and let us revel in the movement of the moment of togetherness
all of us holding hands as we travel in tandem between the narrow span of city and the sea
— inspired by #nwp Write Across America, via University of California Irvine Writing Project
Lining wooden rails wandering protected trails of twisting winding paths, to there, we walk, then back
Our quiet cameras click to call at seabirds, rising, then fall back where ocean meets earth; this sanctuary's rebirth

Panic doesn't come until we notice the fading sun
this mountain path we're on is a different one
than the one we wanted to find ourselves on
backtrack 'til dark, find the place in this story where we first started from

I see another wave being born ... – Paul M Chafer, from “Surfing”
It's hard to know if you ever see the exact moment when a wave grows -
we only ride reverberations afterwards -
as the tide pulls in, out we go

It is the map I follow back to understand what shaped me ... — from Kim Barnes, via In the Wilderness: Coming Of Age In Unknown Country
Torn corners crayoned lines lingered places: (this) paper's kind
Kindred colors crooked roads ragged memory: (this) map, unfolds
