If you've landed on write.as and started being part of this FOSS way of doing things you've probably had your fair amount of experience of the internet and its content.

The general idea of the 'open source' vibe is that every technological discovery and every technological news should be implemented allowing every person to take part in its creation and / or maintenance.

This is the old “freedom” thesis that over and over again we strive to advocate for, nothing new under the sun and same old sun lighting this universe or, in this case, this Fediverse.

Collectiveness Through Federation, that's the simple idea ruling this new kind of approach to social medias and information exchange; nothing outrageously new, really, since the technology allowing it entered the scenes many years ago when the first email was sent.

Like different email providers can communicate to each other in a mutual exchange of information thanks to a mutual and common protocol so does this new plethora of social media platforms, imitating the most famous big ones and improving them, coloring the experience with a new hidden philosophical mean between every key stroke and every toot.

Mastodon, Pleroma, Pixelfed, Peertube to name few, all going with the same approach, create an gather good contents, accessible to everyone, no need to pay.

Each individual can express itself, each community can gather and create its own environment to suites the needs of the users, the common protocols allow every user of every community to communicate between one another; this is very much like reality, it is indeed the beginning of a virtualization of real infrastructures on a virtual level.

This direct parallelism reflects also the negative sides of every human social structure; giving contained and self-managed environment to people often sparks isolation and self-managed environments can gather people with commonly referred 'unsocial' behaviours or ideas.

This is the exact problem and paradox of this system; freedom must be granted, but to what extent? The answer, in my opinion, is yet to be answered; probably the answer must be found in a substantial change into people ideas and values.

Nevertheless, should i paint myself part of a technologically advanced community 150 years from now, i think i would look behind to find in these instances the first primordial signs to what became a drastic paradigm shift.

I'm not saying that we're on the verge of a revolution here, there's still so much road to do, so much dirt to wash and so much changes to wait for, for that reality to be just “virtually real”.

Or, at least, that is what i hope.
