Tree Seeds Stratification

#knoydart #permaculture #trees

Oaks sown directly into pots and in to the cold frame until Spring.

Hazel, Maple, Birch and Scots Pine are in a 50:50 mix in the bottom of the fridge for the next month; from when they will be sown into pots and into the cold frame.

I have Wych Elm, Cherry, Rowan, Spindle, Juniper, Crab Apple and Small Leaved Lime to place into 50:50 mix before beginning a 6 – 12 week cycle in 68 degs, thence upto 30 weeks in a combination of the fridge and shed.

Stratification for those not in the know is a method of breaking the dormancy in the seed, germination won’t happen or results will be inferior unless it happens. Once the seed has gone through this process and is sown, germination takes place and then the seedlings/young trees are grown on for up to 2 years before planting out in their final destination.
