Prelude:

I would like to challenge you. If you identify as conservative, you will probably agree with my opening statements but then by the end, perhaps you will see something different. If you are a liberal, you are going to condemn me in the first few paragraphs and then rail against me without letting me finish. Keep reading to the end, both of you.

This is a series of posts I hope will shed some logical thinking on problems that charge people up. This hasn't worked well in the past as we saw when a guy from Google asked the unaskable questions. But I'm going to try anyway.

Part 1. Transgender

We all know that there are people who think they are women in men's bodies and men who are in women's bodies. There's no doubt that people belive that. Society has decided that that's great and we ought to hail these brave heros. So, for now, let's say that's true. After all, it is their choice, right?

Now go Google Body Integrity Dysphoria. This is where people wake up one day — for no clear reason — and decide “Hey! What's this arm doing here? That doesn't belong to me!” They will beg doctors to remove the arm (or leg or whatever). If the doctors won't — and they won't — people have been known to injure themselves to ensure the doctors must remove the limb.

So... that's OK too, right? After all, perhaps that is a one-armed man or a parapalegic living in a whole person's body, right? And, after all, it should be their choice.

You probably don't agree with that statement. We pretty much intuitively know that people have two arms and two legs and if you think you don't when you do, there's something wrong with you. So why is thinking that about your sex organs different?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that in either case you should harm the person or make fun of them or mistreat them. I'm saying, what's the difference? If the limb I want to get rid of is a sex organ — which I guess is only a limb about half the time, but you take my point — why is that different?

Seems like we should either embrace the body integrity people and give them reality shows, Federal grant money, and celbrate them in the media or we need to treat transgender as a mental illness.

I know the liberal are already ready to attack about how narrow-minded and awful I am. But think of this. I'll gladly adopt your position if you'll only agree to apply it across the board. If you can't then I'd be very interested in a rational reason why you think those two things are different. Notice I said rational.

So much of the arguments about this are rooted in the stupid on both sides. God doesn't want you to do that is not a rational argument. But neither is just “you are intolerant!” Not unless you can tell me why your oppositon of the parapalegic who lives in a two-legged body is not just as intolerant.

Your move.

P.S. I will try to tag these kinds of posts with #pologic — short for political logic so you can find them.
