Roscoe's Quick Notes

my micro-blog

Up early, I suppose. Woke at ~02:30 and thought I was just up with insomnia, but here I am at ~04:30, sitting in the living room, dressed for the morning, drinking coffee, and watching OAN News on TV, so I guess I'm up now for the day. At least the early part of it. As long as I can stay awake to take the brown garbage out to the curb for the Monday pickup, then I'll welcome a comfortable nap.

I consider this a pretty good day. Didn't get to every one of the chores I'd planned, but I surprised myself by successfully completing one that has remained undone for years. I got our Portal TV unit set up and running again. This will make video chatting so much more pleasant.

Yesterday's yard work took its toll on my arthritic old self, leaving me with much more soreness than normal when I woke this morning. Fingers, hands, shoulders, and back were stiff and painful. So I considered this a recovery day and mostly rested. Tomorrow I may walk down to Stanley's Icehouse for a bit of exercise. We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Each day since the wife left on her vacation has been a day of adjustment here.

This day was very productive: I made good progress in the two projects I'd set for today: spending 2 hours at yard work, mowing and raking the front yard; and reassigning one of my regular billings to a new credit card which will make budgeting the 1st few months of 2025 easier to handle.

Tonight I'll be listening to college football, IU vs Notre Dame.

The major part of this day has been smoothly productive. The only points of frustration came from trying to communicate with someone who has a very limited understanding and a significant amount of misunderstanding of how computer messaging works. Communications are so often a challenge. sigh.

This has been a day of making adjustments, and tomorrow will be another. The wife is taking a well-deserved 3-week vacation to the other side of the world, visiting family members she's not seen for decades, and grandchildren she's never been able to see in person. So I'm here at home, holding down the fort while she's gone.

Lord knows I've got plenty do do here. But for the next 3-weeks I won't need to wake early to fix breakfast and see her off to work. So today I've turned off the alarms I've been using to wake myself early. Wonder how long it will take me to get used to sleeping in. Heh. Guess I'll find out.

Gingerbread House

In addition to the Christmas Cookies pictured in yesterday's post, the young cooks prepared more Christmas treats. Seen here with the Gingerbread Houses they made are my daughter, one of my granddaughters, and my great grandson.

Bishop-Queen-2pawn-combination-checkmate

Pictured above is a Bishop-Queen-2 pawns combination checkmate I used to capture the White King in winning a correspondence chess game this morning. As you can see, my Bishop on the b6 square delivers the mating move. He is protected by my Queen, who also covers 2 of the King's possible flight squares. My pawns on b7 and c6 cover the other possible flight squares.

Watching this afternoon's Army / Navy college football game. At least for as long as the TV can pull in a strong signal. If reception gets too wonky, I'll switch to radio coverage.
