Much of this Thursday morning has been spent tweaking the new OS (Debian 11.10) I installed last night on my big, old laptop. The installation process went smoothly, and adjusting the settings is going well, too.

I won this Correspondence Chess game yesterday with the White army when my opponent playing Black resigned on his 52nd move. The position of pieces at game's end is shown above. As you can plainly see, he was right to do so. It was going to be a simple matter for me to advance one of my pawns to its last rank and promote it to a 2nd White Queen. And with two Queens I could quickly squeeze his King into a checkmate against an edge of the board.

Yesterday's yard work has taken its toll. Or, better said, the work of two out of the three previous days: Saturday's work out back, and Monday morning's work in the front yard. Soreness and weakness in my hands, especially my right hand, and in my back and shoulders, especially my left shoulder, is pretty profound. Despite that I was able to get my weekly laundry done today: two washer and dryer loads, now all folded, hung up, and put away. So now the old boy rests, for a few days anyway.

More chess games coming! Oh, my!
I found the following message waiting for me when I checked into one of my chess clubs this morning: “Congratulations on being the winner of your group in the 1st round of Casual Chess section, 239th GameKnot tournament! The player with the top score in your group has been moved to the next higher section due to their top rating in the past 90 days exceeding the rating limit of the section, so you will be advancing to the next round as the runner-up.
“2nd round will start on Monday, September 16th, 2024.”
Yikes! I'm already expecting a good number of new games later this month when a tourney over at ICCF in which I'm registered issues pairings and begins play. And now I have these new ones at GameKnot starting next week.

A slow, easy Sunday is underway. Arthritis in my right hand and left shoulder is problematic, but that's expected following yesterday morning's yard work. Hopefully the hand and shoulder will be healed up enough to let me get some front yard work taken care of tomorrow or Tuesday morning.
Following an early NFL game then a mid-afternoon Indiana Fever game, both on TV, are on my agenda today. Laundry and yard work are planned for Monday and Tuesday. Later this week I hope to upgrade the Debian OS on this laptop from version 10.4 to 11.6.

Early afternoon Saturday of a day that's already been productive. This morning I spent two hours doing yard work: mowing the alley and trimming the bushes growing through the back fence. Listening to college football is occupying my afternoon, and tonight I've got Svengoolie.

You know, one thing that really bothers me about trying to follow WNBA games is there's no way to do it without subscribing to a myriad of streaming services. There is no one service that carries all the games. I know. I've subbed to many of them. And the WNBA (or its streaming carriers) tends to block viewers claiming territorial reasons when none could possibly apply. Hopefully, with all the increased viewership and money coming into the WNBA now, they'll be able improve this situation for next season.

So much of this day has been spent looking forward to tonight's Thursday Night NFL game between the Ravens and Chiefs. And now, checking the current weather in KC, where the game is to be played, I see thunderstorms and lightning. Hope they play. My plan is to listen to a radio broadcast of the game through the NFL+ app.

And another good Wednesday winds down. Watching a replay of Sunday's Indiana Fever vs Dallas Wings WNBA game that I was unable to see when it was first played on Sunday. The last several days of rain have got the ground too wet to mow, but when things dry out I will absolutely have to take the lawn mower out to the front yard.

These Tuesdays that come after a 3-day weekend always seem out-of-synch to me. Sort of like a Monday but not, ya' know? At least I made it through this one without breaking anything, or getting into any kind of trouble.
