5 piece combination checkmate

Looking at the graphic image above which shows the position of pieces at game's end, you can see that while my f2-Rook delivers the mating move, each one of my other pieces: Queen, King, Knight, and pawn is actively covering one or more of all the White King's possible flight squares. He's dead where he sits and he has no safe place to go.

2 Rooks Checkmate

I won this server-based correspondence chess club game playing Black a few minutes ago with a basic 2 Rooks Checkmate. Is this the first combination checkmate everyone learns? I remember learning it as a young boy from my father nearly seventy years ago, and thinking then it was the coolest thing! I still smile every time I use it. :)

The graphic near the top of this post shows the position of pieces on our board at game's end. Our full move record follows: 1. e4 a6 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 e5 4. a3 Nf6 5. d3 h6 6. IU Sports

GO HOOSIERS!

Today we have two IU basketball games to follow. First up will be the Lady Hoosiers as the IU Women's Basketball Team travels to meet the Florida Gulf Coast Lady Eagles. This game is scheduled to Tipoff at Noon, my local time.

Later today the IU Men's Basketball Team will be hosting the Kansas State Wildcats. This game is scheduled to start at 19:00, my local time.

I have conflicting obligations that may prevent my following both of these games in their entirety, but I'll listen to each of them as much I can.

GO HOOSIERS!

And so the adventure continues.

Go Pacers!

Pacers vs. Pistons

Okay, I have no illusions about how this evening's game between the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons is going to go. The Pistons are among the very hottest teams in the League right now. They come into tonight riding a 12-game winning streak. The Pacers, on the other hand, have won only two games so far this season. But I WILL be cheering for my Pacers.

Born and raised in in the State of Indiana, I lived in the Circle City of Indianapolis for a few years before moving to Texas. While living in Indianapolis I held season tickets for the Pacers games and loved watching Reggie Miller play. While listening to the 2025 Pacers play tonight, I'll be remembering when I sat up in the stands at Market Square Arena and cheered for my guys. And I'll cheer for every good Pacers play and score tonight.

GO PACERS!

And the adventure continues...

Go Colts!

Colts vs. Chiefs

Nearly halftime as I start following the Indianapolis Colts vs. the Kansas City Chiefs NFL game, with the Colts leading 14 to 9.

Remembering the years I lived in Indy, I always try to cheer for Indianapolis teams.

And so the adventure continues.

Queen-Bishop Checkmate

This club-based correspondence chess game that I won earlier today by checkmate was one of the quickest (as in accomplished with fewest moves) that I can remember having won by checkmate in... heck, as far back as I can remember.

As the image above of our board at game's end shows, my Black Queen to the G2 square is the mating move. She is protected there by her Bishop at F3; that Bishop is also covering the White King's only possible flight square.

Our full move record for this game: 1. d4 h6 2. e4 a6 3. Nc3 d6 4. Bd3 Nf6 5. Nf3 Bg4 6. O-O Nc6 7. d5 Ne5 8. Be3 Nxf3+ 9. gxf3 Bh5 10. Qd2 Qd7 11. Rfd1 Bxf3 12. Re1 Qg4+ 13. Kf1 Qg2# 0-1

Go Hoosiers

Lions vs Hoosiers

Listening now to the Flagship Station for IU Sports ahead of tonight's early men's college basketball game, as the Lindenwood Lions travel from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri to meet the IU Hoosiers at Bloomington Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana. Tipoff is scheduled for 17:00 Central Time.

Go Hoosiers!

And the adventure continues.

Rook-Queen-Rook Checkmate

I won this club-based tournament correspondence chess game a few hours ago playing Black when I caught the White King in a Rook, Queen, Rook Checkmate. The above graphic image shows position of pieces at game's end. You can see my G1 Rook delivering the mating move. The White King's only possible flight squares were covered by my Queen at C4 and my other Rook at D8.

The full move record of this game: 1. e4 a6 2. d4 h6 3. Nf3 d6 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. Bc4 Nc6 6. O-O Be6 7. Qd3 Bxc4 8. Qxc4 Na5 9. Qa4+ Nc6 10. d5 b5 11. Qb3 Na5 12. Qb4 c6 13. dxc6 Nxc6 14. Adjudicated Win

A Chess Club in which I play sent me the following message of adjudication this morning.

“In accordance with GK tournament rules, one or more of your games in 253rd GK tournament, round 1 have been automatically adjudicated because they are among the last 1% of unfinished games in your tournament section. Each game was evaluated by a chess engine, up to 20 moves ahead, and a probable outcome was decided based on the current position. Please note that this only affects the tournament table and the tournament results — the games remain in progress and can be finished normally. Which means they are no longer considered to be part of the tournament, but you can continue playing them and they will affect your rating and stats as usual at the time they are finished. “Game vs josluiferrod adjudicated as a win (last move: 85. Rh5+)”

This message refers to the game with the board position, following White's 85. Rh5+ move, shown near the top of this post. Though I've already been declared the winner of this game according to the tournament table, I plan to play it out to the end. Depending on what White chooses to do, I should be able to checkmate his King in a handful of moves or so.

And the adventure continues.
