It is actually a little astonishing that the Church would use such an expression in Her liturgy. The fact that God should have willed that we come into His intimacy is a grace. That is exactly what the word means, a gratuitous gift: a tremendous, unbelievable grace, one to which we had absolutely no claim. We could perhaps be tempted to say, “But why did God love us so much? He should have just left us with our poor human nature. Why do we need to enter the very nature of God, to be so close to God?
