Infinite snot organ
I thought I had a fairly robust immune system, resistant to many of the seasonal colds that go around... and then my little girl went to nursery. In the last 9 months I must have had more colds and sick days than the previous 9 years. OK, that might be hyperbole but it sure feels that way – and don't get me started on the weekend of fun we had with Norovirus!
Right now I'm off work for the second day with this latest cold, having pretty much lost my voice this time around, which is a new experience for me. It's weird to croak and whisper, and not to be able to sing. The infinitely regenerating inflatable snot organ in my head seems to be slowing down its production rate, which is a good sign at least, and is letting me tap out a blog without pressure on my eyeballs. Should be back to The Day JobTM in a day or two.
Working from home adds an interesting spin to being sick. If you're not going to see your work colleagues anyway, how much do you really need to take a sick day? For me at least, I'm applying the principle of common sense a.k.a. would I go to my office if I was this ill? If the answer is “no”, then take a sick day! Besides, I'm not a believer in “presenteeism” anyway, as I think it ultimately costs in organisational productivity if you do go to work ill and make your colleagues sick too. Hopefully a more precautionary approach to such behaviour will come out of this pandemic.
Sick or not we still have a delightful and energetic toddler to look after, and she's well worth the extra days of illness in my life. Although less of them would be welcome!
