LonghouseLife :: Life on the Edge...

Today I received the bits n bobs from Trident. I was disappointed by the amount of packaging they thought to use though – far too much plastic wrapping as a filler, because they claim to only have one box available and it was around 10x too large for the contents..!

I will endeavour to keep a little update of the repairs etc here.

The boat had been under a tarp, but on the ground for a while before I was given it. It has sat up off the ground either on its launching trolly and in the garage or propped up and under a tarp outside when I needed the garage space recently. It is now on a DIY 'dolly' in the garage where I can work on it either way up as required.

So long, since my last post on the Blog. Life seems to have had other needs and time spent writing and online seemed not to be important..!

Life around the Longhouse has been filled. The garden is greening with plenty of summer rain and a few sunny interludes. I finished building the greenhouse, we can now have a better climate for veg and salad growing, therefore extending the season in these parts. The veg plot is growing well and I have begun some harvesting of Lettuce, Spring Onions mostly, but also Oriental Greens and soon we should have Carrots, Beetroot and New Potatoes.

I will be listing prints here, on an ad-hoc basis, for sale.
Due to the process required in creating these prints in the darkroom and the traditional chemistry used there may be slight variations in each image produced. This is something to be celebrated as it makes each print unique in its own way.

As the Longhouse Forest Garden develops the aim is to both propagate new plants and collect seed that we can sell on to other like-minded folks. Our plot is in its early stages of creation, there is a mature canopy layer and some under-story and ground cover layer development as we are based on what was typical West of Scotland forest land.

Over the last year we have planted more native trees and have also opened up some of the woodland to let in light and create planting space. The plot will feature a mix of ornamental, native plants with under planting of edibles. We are creating an orchard area that will also feature other edible and useful shrubs amongst the fruit trees and bushes. At the rear of the house we have a traditional 'annual' vegetable plot that will slowly incorporate Perennial veg, and these will also feature in other areas of the garden.

Plants and seed will come with provenance. There is likely to be a random selection each season, depending on what we are growing and collecting.

The stock we have will be listed here on this page.

General

This page is a place to record the occasional thoughts, happenings, images around life in Knoydart, Scotland.

Nothing will be regular, as and when the mood takes and I have something worth sharing..!

Photography

I am a photographer working only in film based mediums. I take mostly Black & White which I develop and print using traditional chemistry and darkroom processes. Occasionally I use colour film in Medium Format which I have developed by a professional lab and I then scan the resulting negatives.

In the age of digital it is unusual to use an 'old school' technology. Not as unusual as you might think though. Film is making a resurgence, as are the traditional darkroom and alternative processes in creating print based images.

The main reason to shoot film is in the 'slowing down' of the whole picture making process. Through this you are connected in a much more tangible way to the end result. If that end result is a physical print, been able to handle that and see the depth that you can only get with traditional techniques elicits responses not attainable through other means.

For almost 18 months now I have toyed with the idea of selling my Sony A7r mirrorless 36mp digital camera. I had initially bought this body around four years previously for the sole purpose of using legacy lenses, as it had the greatest range of 3rd party adaptors on the market available. It did that admirably...
