Roscoe's Quick Notes

my micro-blog

It will be interesting to see how well I function today, given the level of insomnia that visited me last night.

Briefly noted mid-morning: The sun is shining brightly and will eventually start to dry things off after yesterday's rain. And that will allow me to get some work done on the lawn, after it warms up some.

New 2021 wall calendars are hung, and soon I'll change the paper planner pages, too. Beyond that, the day's attention will be mostly spent on the yard work mentioned above, College Bowl Games, chess work, and the coding project.

Oh, here's wishing you all a Happy New Year!

No disrespect intended, but one sure sign that 2020 has been an oddball year is the Ball State Cardinals Football Team playing in this afternoon's Arizona Bowl. And early in the game they're ahead! Huh!

As I sit with my morning coffee and consider the day ahead, it becomes clear that effective time management will be important if I'm to make this day productive or if it will devolve into a pile of wasted hours.

And it's Monday. My three primary chores for the day: the weekly laundry, chess work and study, coding work and study.

Despite the fact that I despise the NFL and the business of professional football, I love the game. I grew up playing football as a boy, and will always enjoy watching it played. It comforts me to have games running in the background while I attend to other things, and that's how I intend to spend the remainder of this day.

I've seen the movie on tonight's Svengoolie so many times, but it's still fun to watch.

I just opened the front cover of the latest Sports Illustrated magazine that was delivered a few days ago, the NBA Preview edition, and what did I see? A full page ad for Lucky Strike cigarettes.

Now I don't smoke, but I'm not a health-nazi; I respect other folks' rights to decide what to do with and to their own bodies as long as it doesn't interfere with someone else. Still, there seems something dishonest about a publication intended to promote the appreciation of athletic performance advertising a product that, if used as intended, will inhibit or prevent anyone from participating in athletic activities.

To keybase or not to keybase? That is the question I'm considering now. On the one hand, keybase appears to be perfectly suited for things I have in mind. But on the other hand, it's now owned by Zoom, and I really don't want to get tangled up with Communist China.

My first happy news of the day came from a TD in the ICCF. It was the pairings for a tournament in which I recently entered. There are 7 of us playing: an Italian, a German, a Croatian, 3 Englishmen and me. Though the official start date of our tourney is 04 January, I've received in this morning's email opening moves from some of the guys.
