Roscoe's Quick Notes

my micro-blog

Early afternoon Saturday of a day that's already been productive. This morning I spent two hours doing yard work: mowing the alley and trimming the bushes growing through the back fence. Listening to college football is occupying my afternoon, and tonight I've got Svengoolie.

You know, one thing that really bothers me about trying to follow WNBA games is there's no way to do it without subscribing to a myriad of streaming services. There is no one service that carries all the games. I know. I've subbed to many of them. And the WNBA (or its streaming carriers) tends to block viewers claiming territorial reasons when none could possibly apply. Hopefully, with all the increased viewership and money coming into the WNBA now, they'll be able improve this situation for next season.

So much of this day has been spent looking forward to tonight's Thursday Night NFL game between the Ravens and Chiefs. And now, checking the current weather in KC, where the game is to be played, I see thunderstorms and lightning. Hope they play. My plan is to listen to a radio broadcast of the game through the NFL+ app.

And another good Wednesday winds down. Watching a replay of Sunday's Indiana Fever vs Dallas Wings WNBA game that I was unable to see when it was first played on Sunday. The last several days of rain have got the ground too wet to mow, but when things dry out I will absolutely have to take the lawn mower out to the front yard.

These Tuesdays that come after a 3-day weekend always seem out-of-synch to me. Sort of like a Monday but not, ya' know? At least I made it through this one without breaking anything, or getting into any kind of trouble.

Happy Labor Day to any visitors here who note this American holiday. Though traditionally set aside to honor the labor union movement in America, it is seen now by most people as an end of Summer holiday. In that sense, I hope that you all have had a good Summer of 2024, and that the upcoming Autumn will be good for you, too.

Last night before bedtime I checked the links on the day's post to my Roscoe's Story blog and found one broken. The url was corrupted, an extra character had slipped in. That was easily fixed, but the post had already gone public. Checked more links in that post and found two others similarly broken. So I fixed them, too.

Those broken links were all in two paragraphs I mostly, but not entirely, copy and paste from one day's post to the next, so I checked the previous day's post and found the same broken links. Fixed those and went back another day, then another, and more, finding the broken links in almost every post since August 4th. Fixed them all, one by one.

Yes, I'm going to be more careful about checking my work from now on.

Early Saturday afternoon finds this first College Football Saturday of the 2024-2025 Season moving comfortably along. Morning chores (prayers, monitoring bank activity, chess work, etc.) all went smoothly. Had a delightful video chat with my daughter who was with her granddaughters at their soccer games back in Indiana. Then it was time for college football.

For the first year in a long time I now have streaming TV access to ESPN and the games they carry. So the first game I started to watch, after watching the last part of ESPN's College Gameday show, was Virginia Tech vs. Vanderbilt. Before half-time of that game I reverted to what has become my favorite way to follow football, and switched to the radio broadcast of the Georgia Bulldogs vs. Clemson Tigers.

For the rest of the season I'll be following football on the radio rather than watching TV coverage. It is a much better experience.

Expect more than a little wonkiness here as I change the note-taking app I use as part of the process of generating these Quick Notes posts. I'm transitioning away from Google Keep to Standard Notes. The two apps work quite a bit differently from each other and it's taking me awhile (a good long while, I'm afraid) to learn and get used to those differences.

Finally got some yard work done. This morning I trimmed back bushes in the front yard and side yard. Spent an hour out there and worked up a powerful sweat.

Now taking steps toward completing one of my 2024 New Years Resolutions: de-Googling my Internet operations. Have beefed up my proton mail account to replace gmail, and am moving my note-taking from Google Keep to Standard Notes. It will take a few weeks probably to get the new systems up and running and the old systems put to sleep.
