Roscoe's Quick Notes

my micro-blog

All the drama this Summer involved with the WNBA around the Indiana Fever and their star players: (Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham, and others) have kept me away from following their games and “news” reports and, until recently, their socials. Though I'm a fan of the Fever, the team and the players, I am VERY much a NO DRAMA kind of guy.

That having been said, I will have my radio tuned to the Fever vs. Aces game tonight. GO FEVER!

This has been a quiet Monday here. I didn't get around to doing my laundry today, which is a chore I usually delegate to Mondays. But I can easily put it off until tomorrow, or even the day after if needed. I did try to mow the front yard, but didn't get much done; only that part bordering the front curb, and part bordering the sidewalk and the path leading to my front door. But... it was too hot out there, and I tired quickly. So I sat down with a bottle of cold water, thought about the situation, and decided to put the lawnmower away. The mowing can wait.

Rook-Knight-Checkmate

I won this Correspondence Chess Club Tournament Game this morning via a Rook-Knight Checkmate. The image above shows the Black King attacked by my d7 Rook which is protected by my e5 Knight. That King's only possible flight squares are covered by that e5 Knight and my d4 pawn.

The full move record of this game is: 1. d4 d5 2. h3 e6 3. a3 Qf6 4. Nf3 Nc6 5. Bg5 Qf5 6. e3 h6 7. Bf4 Kd7 8. Bb5 g5 9. Bxc6+ bxc6 10. Ne5+ Ke7 11. Nxc6+ Kd7 12. Ne5+ Ke7 13. O-O gxf4 14. exf4 Qxf4 15. c4 Bb7 16. Nc3 c6 17. Ne2 Qh4 18. cxd5 cxd5 19. Rc1 Bg7 20. Rc7+ Kd6 21. Rd7# 1-0

Hoping to settle my mind in a healthy way before bedtime, I've got the radio set to bring me College Football, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane vs. Oklahoma St. Cowboys. Early in the 1st Qtr. Tulsa leads Oklahoma St. 7-3.

I was surprised and more than a little disappointed this morning when I arrived for my scheduled doctor's appointment and was greeted by the check-in ladies at the front counter all wearing those goofy paper masks so popular back during the plandemic days. When I presented my insurance card and told them which doctor I was scheduled to see, one of the ladies handed me a mask and told me, “We're a mask-wearing building now.” Huh.

Taking a seat in the waiting room with my mask casually draped over one ear, I smiled when a nurse NOT wearing a mask appeared from a door and called my name. Following her I was relieved to see that none of the nurses back in the service area were masked. So I stuck mine in my bag.

All of the time spent back in the service area, in different offices, I saw plenty of nurses, med techs, and my doctor. None of them masked. Ha! Didn't fish my mask out of my bag until I left the service area, passed through the waiting room, and left the building.

For the last several months the USPO has delivered my mail to the mailbox in front of my house mid-morning, Monday through Saturday, any time between ~09:30 and ~11:00. Without fail. Except for today. And today I knew I had a new credit card out for delivery.

When my mail wasn't delivered in the morning I began to get concerned. I kept checking the mailbox every hour through the afternoon and into the early evening. Finally I found the mail in the box when I checked at 18:00 hours. Whew!

Today was a better day than yesterday, I'm happy to note. For some reason I had the sense of being more “present” today. The only change to my regular routine was the addition of mild physical exercises. It's my intention to make those exercises an everyday thing. I've tried that before but for some reason gave up. I'll try to stick with them this time.

It's taken me two days, but I've mowed and trimmed the front yard and both side yards. A two-hour work shift yesterday, and a two-hour work shift today. Both work shifts found me mowing and/or trimming for approx. 10 minutes, then heading inside to cool down and drink water, then back outside for more work, then back inside. I kept alternating the working with breaks to cool down inside for each two-hour work shift, yesterday's and today's. And finally...

My front yard looks fine. One of the better-looking yards on the street if I do say so myself. :)

Earlier today Charlie Kirk was assassinated. He was shot in the neck from 200 yards away.

He was a fine young man who leaves behind a young wife and two small children. They are in my prayers.

...winds down quietly.

It was necessary to call two of my banks today. And, as everyone knows, I am NOT a telephone person. However, both calls went extremely well.

The ground around my house appears to be drying finally from those storms that rolled through late last week. And I can go to bed tonight with the happy thought of maybe being able to get some yard work done tomorrow.

The adventure continues.
