Roscoe's Quick Notes

QNNOV2023

An interesting Thursday, this. It has had the “feel” of a Friday.

It's been a rather good day for the hips, too. Didn't start out that way. Hips were weaker and less stable early, but after a mid-morning nap they became stronger and less painful as the day wore on.

Thought for today from Archbishop Lefebvre :

“There are always these two aspects in the liturgy, but they are magnificently balanced. The Church does not only ask us to have contrition, to weep over our sins, to do penance. She does insist on that aspect at certain times, particularly during periods like Advent or Lent. At other times, in the hymns and in many psalms, She multiplies the acts of praise and thanksgiving; She makes us sing the greatness of God and His benefits; She makes us live in God; She makes us participate already a little bit in the eternal canticle which the saints are singing in Heaven: Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus...”

Late afternoon Wednesday and it's already been an eventful day. I took the 1st steps toward my cataract surgery.

Called my eye doctor's office. When he saw me last May, several months ago, he told that I needed the cataracts replaced. I hesitated then, and he told me to give him a call when I was ready to see again. This morning I called.

Next Wednesday morning I have an appointment with the surgeon. This afternoon Sylvia took me to his office where I picked up a stack of papers, forms to fill out and bring with me next Wednesday.

Thought for today from Archbishop Lefebvre :

“We really are in awe before all the wealth of the liturgy. Take the introits and the graduals, as well. How many profound and moving things in those graduals, those calls upon the mercy, upon the goodness of God, in praise of God! In these prayers of the Church we can always find one of the four ends of the sacrifice of the Mass: latreutic, eucharistic, propitiatory, or impetratory. And we realize that we can bring all of the texts of the liturgy to one or another of those ends. Sometimes it is adoration that predominates, sometimes thanksgiving, sometimes the presentation of our miseries, of our sins, a call to the mercy of God, and then finally asking for graces that we need.”

Not a bad Tuesday, all things considered.

I continue to be impressed at how well the little ceramic space heaters are keeping this joint comfortably warm. Heck I even had to turn on the ceiling fan back here in my room this afternoon to cool things down.

Re: the hips, this has not been the best of days, but neither has it been the worst. Taking all my pain meds on schedule helped, and applying the Magnilife ointment midday.

Thought for today from Archbishop Lefebvre :

“As we meditate the liturgical offices, let us draw special nourishment from the prayers composed by the Church for the proper of the Mass and along with the common, of course. The proper always contains a particular lesson for that feast. And the prayers, so short but so beautiful, give us every time a real subject of meditation. Whether it be the collect, the secret or the postcommunion, we are astounded by their depth and by the truths of our faith which the Church is setting before us.”

This Monday found me waking well-rested. Two sleep segments of nearly 4 hours each, separated by a brief half-hour break. That's about as good as it ever gets in the Roscoe-verse.

Was able to spend the morning without my walking sticks, but the pan and weakness returned midday and I was my old crippled up self all afternoon and evening. I am thankful for the morning, though. I was able to get my laundry done, finally.

Thought for today from Archbishop Lefebvre :

“We need to go to God by the ways of the Church ñ they are the surest of all ñ and not by our own personal ways. It is certainly very good that we express our devotion to God with our whole heart and soul in our meditation and in our personal prayers; but we are going to pray all the better the more we come to live and breathe the piety of the Church. Never could we have a piety as great as that of the Church Herself. The Church is the mystical Spouse of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the songs of the Spouse are inimitable. Gregorian Chant all by itself truly lifts us up toward Heaven, lifts us up toward to God.

So let us follow these pathways in order to know God better, to know Him as the Church wants to make us know Him. We can't start thinking that we are better than other people because we are capable of finding new pathways. On the contrary, let us walk in the pathways that the Church has traced out for us, loving with all our heart that great school which is the liturgy of the Church.”

A VERY good Sunday winds down.

Last night was the 2nd spent sleeping on my new mattress.. Yes, there was some tossing and turning, but not as much as most nights. And there was more actual sleep.

When I woke there was MUCH LESS pain and wonkiness in my hips. I found that I could walk from my room to the bathroom, and to the kitchen to fix the morning coffee without the need for a walking stick. Had to walk slowly and carefully, of course, but it was the 1st time in a LONG time I'd been able to do that! YES!! Progress.

Thought for today from Archbishop Lefebvre :

“The Church has organized the temporal cycle and the sanctoral cycle to make us participate in the mystery of our Lord over the course of the whole year. The temporal is divided especially into the time of Christmas and the time of Easter, and the sanctoral has us participate in the feasts of saints throughout the year.

...Why has the Church arranged the liturgical cycle in that manner? It is to make us contemplate all of the mysteries of our Lord. Ultimately, it is our Credo which is being presented to us over the course of the year and on which we are called to meditate in a very special way. The proper texts of the Seasons, prayers, prefaces and so on, are so well chosen, so beautiful that they raise us up, allow us to deepen our faith and increase our charity.”
