If you wonder why those kids were cruel. Yes, that's the reason I don't live in the North. They are very proud of what they call “tactful”. And the more educated a family is, the more they are super crazy about it. Public school was kind of more normal where there were kids from different backgrounds.
My first month in literature, I got the almost worst score of the whole team. In the second month, I was the 3rd best. There was this girl who hated me for no reason because I never cared enough to talk to her, said I got lucky that one time, and I should enjoy while it lasted. After the 3rd month, I was consistently the first, and always left the 2nd a whole lot behind, whoever the 2nd was. The rest of them routinely took turns with the wide range from being the worst and the 2nd, in no particular order. I couldn't keep track of where each one of them went. Nor did I care for.
I'm not that upset that I'm behind. I was never a fast learner. I couldn't just do what everyone else does without understanding why first. And it made me slower than everyone, every time.
But I'm thinking about how I was struggling with every word I wrote down. And how it turned out to be the most amazing power that I have.
