THE BRAZILIAN BOT

HouseofRepresentatives

  • The #Congress plans to start discussing in the next weeks changing the #Brazil(ian) electoral system. The discussion will be about adopting the American system. As is, a councilor or a local representative can live in place A, campaign for people who live in place B, and work for people in place C. Also, candidates who receives insufficient votes, even 1 single vote, can be elected if they're chosen by their party and the party has accumulated enough votes to transfer the excess. To make things even worse, the list of candidates the party chooses to receive the excess of votes is open, meaning the party can pick a name AFTER the votes are counted. Believe it or not, that's how it works in Brazil. Since this electoral system started, in 1988, more than 85% or all councilors and state and federal representatives were elected indirectly.
  • In #Brazil, there is this national association for lawyers and attorneys called #OAB, Brazilian Attorneys-Lawyers Association, and in one post where the association asks for recently graduated attorneys and lawyers (up to 5 years) to attend a commission, you can see the image of a man fixing his LGBT-colored tie and the title “ADVOGADX INICIANTE, PARTICIPE DA SUA COMISSÃO” ('NEW ATTORNEY-LAWYER, ATTEND YOUR COMMISSION') where the first word is the gender neutral form of ADVOGADO (male attorney/lawyer) and of ADVOGADA (female). Every single attorney-lawyer has to be a member of OAB if they want to be able to practice their profession, just so you have an idea of the outreach and power this association has.
  • Although #OperationCarWash was very important for #Brazil to get rid of the left (that was in power), there are some things about the operation that raise questions about the legality of the whole operation, especially since the main member of the operation, #SergioMoro, started messing up by saying #Bolsonaro used to interfere in his work in the #DepartmentofJustice (#MinistryofJustice), more specifically, interfere in the #FederalPolice's (the #Feds) freedom to act, saying during his resignation press conference he had proof of it but never presented it, and since then turning himself into a political enemy. One of the things about #CarWash that has called the attention is the amount of data collected by the operation, reaching 350 terabytes, while the Public Prosecutors Office involved in it has had access to only 40. Attorney General #AugustoAras requested access to the rest of the data, but another important member of the operation, #DeltanDallagnol, asked the #SupremeCourt's (#STF) to deny access. #moro #lavajato
  • #SaoPaulo Governor #Doria is feeling the heat because of his unbridled political aggressiveness towards the #Bolsonaro administration, allies, and even simple citizens, like journalists, and, after some recent and fierce disagreements with big names in his party, the #PSDB, him leaving it is starting to get unavoidable. The reason behind this conflict is the fact that the PSDB, even though it's definitely not a Bolsonaro ally, is not willing to take on Dória's aggressive political antagonism.
  • The #Brazil(ian) #SupremeCourt (#STF) put down #Bolsonaro's vetoes on the mandatory use of masks in schools. One more time, the STF ruling on what it shouldn't, just to antagonize the president. You see, back in 2020, the STF ruled that states and cities should be responsible for what anti#COVID19 measures they take and how they are applied, including the #lockdown, but now each school can't decided over mandating or not, or partially mandating the use of masks.
  • The congressman #FilipeBarros wrote a law bill that removes the absolute power of the Electoral Supreme Court (#STE) to create, change, and remove election rules. The law bill proposes that this becomes the #HouseofRepresentatives' (#LowerHouse #Congress) responsibility. It's already clear that the #SupremeCourt (#STF) is working against the #Bolsonaro administration by ruling about things they shouldn't be ruling, and STF Judge #AlexandreBarroso revealed last year his excitement about the implementation of the vote by phone. If an app happens to be unveiled and the STF rules it will be the means to vote, there will be nothing Bolsonaro or the Houses can do. This law bill is from last year, but the previous chair of the Congress wouldn't even put it to vote, but now that the chair is more aligned with the president and the chair of the commission that analyzes the constitutionality of law bills is a strong Bolsonaro ally, this law bill is sure to go a vote.
  • As has become much more usual in #Brazil after #Bolsonaro was elected, some of the #SupremeCourt (also called #STF) judges keep giving interviews, and in Judge #AlexandreBarroso's latest interview, he said, DO YOU THINK #VENEZUELA IS CONSERVATIVE? I DEFINITELY THINK SO, EVER SINCE #HUGOCHAVEZ. IN MY OPINION, THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A RIGHTWING TYRANNY WITH A DISGUISED RHETORIC. PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T LIVE DURING THE #DICTATORSHIP [it was a #militaryregime, actually] ARE INFLUENCED BY THE RHETORIC OF THOSE WHO MISS A TIME THAT DIDN'T EXIST [one can romanticize about a time they didn't live, but not miss it, or the judge is just dismissing the opinion of those who lived back then, which is vastly positive]. THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO LOST FAITH IN BRAZIL AND MISS WHAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. He also said that it's necessary to DEMYSTIFY FETISHES about the past. In that past, crime was lower, individuals had more freedom, families more power, and development was higher. Are these fetishes to one of our highest level judges?
  • The number is still small, but teachers in private schools in #Brazil are already experimenting pushing for the use of #genderneutral words. For instance, 'thank you' is 'obrigado' when said by a man and 'obrigada' when said by a woman. Its gender neutral is 'obrigade.' Most parents and students are reacting negatively and have been demanding explanations.

  • The Public Prosecutors Office for Labor wrote a recommendation letter for companies and public attorneys where it asks that conflicts over the vaccination of employees be avoided, but it ultimately settles in that, in order to preserve the health of coworkers, the employer can try to convince the employee to get the shot, and fire them if they refuse to get it.
  • A Justice Court ruled in favor of conservative #TerçaLivre channel #YouTube permanently suspended to be reinstated, or they will have to pay a fine for every day that they don't. Terça Livre was suspended as thousands of channels are, without YT making clear what part of a video broke which guideline. This is a great victory for free speech and it opens a precedent for #socialmedia to be finally regulated.
  • Congressman #DanielSilveira (plus 19 others) presented a law bill that prohibits #socialmedia platforms from censoring, shadowbanning, or outright banning posts and accounts whose content do not conflict with constitutional rights. This bill had been presented before, but the previous chair of the House of Representatives would not even put it to vote. Now, under the new chair, the hopes of seeing this law bill going for a vote is back, and Daniel and the others are asking for urgency. After the mass censoring of #Trump, allies, and supporters during his campaign and their eventual mass banning, they don't see why the same won't happen to Bolsonaro, allies, and supporters during this year's #elections. If this bill passes, it will (curiously and surprisingly) teach Americans, mainly #Republicans, a lesson, and #Trump, allies, and supporters will surely cheer.
  • Some people are recording others receiving the anti-#COVID19 vaccine without the nurses being aware, and some of them are seen not giving the shot. You can see the nurse inserting the needle, but they don't push the plunger. #coronavirus
  • #PauloGuedes, the secretary of the department of economy (called 'Ministry of Economy,' and him, 'minister'), said his hopes of having several economy bills passed rose after the election of the new chair of the #HouseofRepresentatives. The previous chair didn't even put the bills to vote.
  • #Bolsonaro, who is currently without a party, is considering joining '#Patriotas' (Patriots) in order to run this year for a second term. His preferred party is '#AliançapeloBrasil' (Alliance for Brazil), but it's still in the process of collecting signatures in order to complete its creation, and thus not ready to have its candidates run in time in this year's elections.
  • Billboards of #SãoPaulo Governor #Dória have been spotted in a city called #CampoGrande, State of #MatoGrosso. Two different billboard versions, one showing him wearing a mask, holding a syringe in one hand, the toothpaste-like box of the only vaccine he's been promoting, the #Chinese #CoronaVac (infamous for its 50-ish % efficacy rate), and the title, VACCINE FOR ALL. The other version shows him wearing a mask and waving a V, and it says, CONGRATULATIONS, DÓRIA. V OF VICTORY, V OF VACCINE, V OF 'VERDADE' (TRUTH). VACCINE FOR ALL. A video went viral for showing a woman driving by when she saw one of those, stopped, pulled her phone up and started recording, showing the billboard in the background while she demanded answers to why São Paulo's governor was being promoted in her state, and who could be funding it, but it was taken down by #YouTube, which claimed it broke their community guidelines. A congressman contacted YT Brasil demanding an explanation, since the video doesn't contain anything that can be considered defamatory, threatening, criminal, or illegal.

  • #PSL Rep #NelsonBarbudo, aiming to give fair treatment to people and institutions that are fact-checked by #factcheckers, proposes a bill demanding that they inform the one being fact-checked before posting a fact-checking, and give them 5 days to counterfact-check. If the fact-checking is not counterfact-checked in 5 days, the fact-checker can proceed to post it, but if they post it without informing and waiting for the counterfact-check up to 5 days, they'll have to pay a 10% fine over their revenue. We from TBB believe that websites that are only fact checkers should simply be outlawed, but this bill is better than nothing.
  • The newly elected president of the #HouseofRepresentatives, #ArthurLira, dismissed 460 employees from temporary government positions only in House. This is an attempt to keep the ex-(and-disgraced-)chair #RodrigoMaia from having influence there by using some of these now-gone employees to transmit information and pass orders, and they would accept doing that for being thankful for the job, as it doesn't require one to take any public exam, but just be appointed.

  • Now that the antagonistic president of the #HouseofRepresentatives is gone and that the chair of its #CCJ* ('Justice and Constitution Comission,' a department that can be composed of up to 66 representatives and is responsible for analyzing the legality of a bill through public hearings before it heads to the House for a vote) is now a strong #Bolsonaro ally, Congresswoman #BiaKicis, the hopes of campaign promises to become a reality are back to high, such as, ending career-ending justice hearings for every single case of a law enforcement officer firing a gun, such as, giving Army soldiers the permission to be able to act as police officers in cases when they are sent to help keep or restore order (believe it, as of now, they can't shoot, but just hope their presence intimidates), and such as, approving the Gov't Administrative Reform. Of course, there are many more things relate to gun and administration issues Bolsonaro hopes to have the House finally vote.

  • Out of curiosity, the presidents of both houses have unbelievable royal treatment. For instance, they never have to open doors, having someone to walk ahead of them and open, and they don't have to answer their own phones, also having someone to do so. A journalist called #ZéMaria (a good journalist when it comes to Brazilian politics ONLY) told a curious story. After leaving the presidency of a house, an ex-president missed his phone ringing. He wondered if his cell was defective. He called himself from another phone to test it. It rang. From that point on he realized how his presidency was meaningless and absolutely no congressperson had any reason to contact him again.
  • As was expected (as long as there's no #fraud), the candidate of the now ex-president of the #HouseofRepresentatives, #RodrigoMaia, one of two biggest obstacles to the #Bolsonaro administration along with the #SupremeCourt (#STF), lost the election. Rodrigo Maia, while sitting in the house presidency chair, cried like a baby. #ArthurLira, #Bolsonaro's choice, won 302 votes, nearly three fifths of the house. At least in rhetoric, this is a big win for the government. Arthur promised to put to vote the Government Administrative Reform during his first 100 days. Another very important vote is the auditable voting system, which is extremely important in order to avoid what seemed to have happened to Trump, which is even worse in Brazil, as there's zero way to audit the vote.
