Growth and Prosperity in the Digital Asset Space

Coil is a relatively new platform, and many new users have questions. I know I did when I first started. Those who begin creating articles in the early stages of Coil will grow along with the developments of the platform as it evolves.

This article is going to walk you through some key aspects of article creation that are important to pay attention to. If you are brand new, this is going to help you immensely. If you are a Coil veteran, these tips will serve as strong reminders of ways you can optimize your posts for maximum audience attraction and retention.

Let's dive right in and talk about topic selection.

If you already compose articles on a regular basis, then you more than likely have discovered your favored topics. As a brand new writer, you will want to pay close attention to what your interests and passions are. What is it that you enjoy doing on a daily basis that you wouldn't mind sharing with the rest of the world?

For instance, if you enjoy cooking, then perhaps you want to specialize in cooking articles. If you enjoy sports, perhaps you can focus on a specific sport or activity to write about. Choosing 1 or 2 BIG niches and then breaking those down into smaller topics will keep your audience interested without too much guess work on their part.

For example, say you do choose cooking as your BIG niche, you can then break that down into 2-3 sub-topics such as grilling or crock-pot recipes. The criteria for niche / topic selection is somewhat subjective, so take action on what fits your personality and what you want to be known for on Coil. Experiment with this as it may take a good amount of publishing before discover a solid routine.

After you have decided on your topic for your article, it's time to focus on your header image.

The header image is the very first thing your reader will see which makes it an extremely important piece of your article. Does the header image catch your reader's eye? Does it pop? Is it properly aligned to fit Coil's header image dimensions? Does the image convey the article's message clearly and accurately?

A favored resource of mine for header image creation is called Canva.com. Upgrading to the premium version is well worth it because it enables the added features such as resizing and image compression. Pay attention to your header image because it is just as important as the content addressed within the body of the article.

When creating your header image, keep in mind the feeling that you want to instill in your reader. Is it appropriate to add wording to your image or does it look better without words? That decision is up to you and how you want to convey that particular article to your audience. It also depends on the type of article you are composing.

You may need to try a few different image formats to see what works best for your articles. After your audience glances at your header image, they will look at the headline next.

Your article's headline will help your reader determine if it's worth their time to view its contents. In today's instant gratification society, readers need to understand the value up-front before clicking or tapping in. They accomplish this by reading the headline. The job of a good headline is to grab your audience's attention, causing them to want to discover more.

The headline is the hook that will pull them in to consume your material. For example, the headline in this article was tailored specifically to cause you, the reader, to want to learn more while also dispelling a common myth:

Coil How-To's: Compose an Eye-Catching Article Even If You're a Brand-New Creator

“How-to” headlines work well because they promise the reader that they will learn something important. “List style” headlines are also effective because they give the reader clear expectation of what they will get if they spend time consuming that article.

Crafting a quality headline takes a series of trial and error, but you don't have to be left in the dark on this aspect of composition. Here is one of many resources that will help you craft the perfect headlines for your articles.

After your headline is completed, move on to the body of your article.

The body of your article is really where your creative genius will shine through. Be expressive in your articles and don't be afraid to include media such as photos and video to drive your point home. Coil enables creators to use photos, videos, and links in their posts to help give articles an additional dimension.

In general, a good word length for your readers is 500-1500 words. This amount will differ depending on many factors such as the amount of time you have as well as the frequency at which you publish. Publishing once or twice a week will allow you to fit more into each article as opposed to if you are creating on a daily basis.

In order to compose quality, eye-catching articles, compose them when you have plenty of free time and don't feel rushed. Sometimes that may mean waking up early or staying up late. Creativity doesn't flow as well on a time-crunch. Perhaps that may mean adding article creation to your schedule so you don't try to “squeeze it in” during your day.

After you have carefully composed the body of the article, begin considering the formatting.

Formatting is best done after the article is written as to not disturb the creative juices that are flowing. Formatting is a crucial step to article composition because it helps to guide the reader's eye as they are consuming your material. Nothing is worse than entering an article and seeing a huge block of text that is 30 sentences long with no line breaks.

Coil allows creators to add bold, italics, and underline to their text. Not only that, but you can make the text larger, even larger, or do whatever this is called.

All of this can be accomplished by writing the text, then going back and highlighting a word or phrase to reveal the formatting bar. Breaking up the plain text by adding formatting helps guide the reader through your article giving them direction. It also prevents them from getting bored while reading.

Once you have completed formatting, you are almost done. Lets move on to the bonus content.

Bonus content is a feature creators get to utilize on Coil to reward their subscribers. The bonus content gives viewers that added reward, usually at the end of a full article. Adding in bonus content at the end of a full article is known as the 100+20 rule which Coil recommends using.

Basically, you compose an entire article for free, then you add in about 20% more content at the very end that is locked and only subscribers can unlock it. Subscribers are those who pay $5/month via credit card to Coil Inc., unlocking all Web Monetized content without limits.

For example, going back to the cooking niche, if you are teaching someone how to properly grill salmon (my favorite), perhaps your bonus content would mention specific seasoning to use to make it spicy. The bonus content is not set in stone so use your imagination and experiment with different types of content.

You now have the ingredients you need to compose an eye-catching Coil article even if you are a brand new creator. Stay tuned for more Coil How-To's in the near future.

We are in this series talking about the one-of-a-kind XRP Ledger. Today is part 2 where we will explore the technology even further. Go here to view part 1 if you haven't already. In part 2 you will learn about the XRPL consensus protocol.

The XRP Ledger uses a consensus protocol unlike any digital asset that came before it.

xrpl.org

The above fact is important because it showcases the sheer power of this technology. Creators of the ledger created something quite unique and unprecedented. A consensus protocol, when it comes to decentralized systems, is a set of rules that the network follows to keep all participants in agreement at all times on all events that take place on the ledger.

In a centralized system like PayPal for instance, it is easy to track transactions and order them as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on. Decentralized systems have no central authority to order transactions (hence the term decentralized). Since the XRPL is run by a network of validators across the globe, consensus protocols come play a major role in it's success.

Consensus protocols solve what's called the double spend problem. Double spending is when someone spends the same digital asset twice which is a big no-no. If that was allowed, the system would fail since it would no longer be trustless.

The XRP Ledger processes transactions in blocks called “ledger versions”, or “ledgers” for short.

xrpl.org

What's incredible about this is that each ledger version contains 1. The current state of all balances 2. All previously recorded transactions 3. Metadata for the newest ledger version. Each and every transaction is public for anyone to view.

Consensus protocol is always working to agree on a particular set of transactions to apply towards the previous ledger in a certain order, and then confirm that everyone got that same result. If you can simply keep that fact in mind, you have a firm foundation upon which to build your XRPL knowledge base.

Hope that you enjoyed part 2 of the XRP Ledger series talking about consensus protocol. Stay tuned for more from the series as they are released.

Let's talk about the XRP Ledger, also known as the XRPL. The XRPL is a unique and unprecedented technology, built with the intention of fixing many of the short comings that Bitcoin has such as scalability, speed, and cost efficiency.

The XRP Ledger is a decentralized cryptographic ledger, powered by a network of peer-to-peer servers. It is the home of XRP, a digital asset designed to bridge the many different currencies in use worldwide.

xrpl.org

The XRPL has been in existence since 2012 and is an immutable, censorship-resistant record of transactions. Every transaction that gets validated (or entered onto) this ledger is view-able at any time. The ledger runs on a series of computers all across the world and is not controlled by a single or group of entities.

Contrary to what some think, this network is becoming more decentralized as time passes because more nodes are coming online. Another amazing thing about the XRPL is it is open, meaning that anyone can build an app, a product, or a service utilizing it's technology.

The XRP Ledger's consensus algorithm settles transactions in 4 to 5 seconds, processing at a throughput of up to 1500 transactions per second. These properties put XRP at least an order of magnitude ahead of other top digital assets.

xrpl.org

After spending time learning about this technology over the past few months, I have come to realize the true potential that resides inside. With 4-5 second transaction speed and up to 1500 TPS, that makes for one immaculately efficient system for payments.

This has been Part 1 of the XRP Ledger series. Please stay tuned for the next one being released in the upcoming week.

Anthony Pompliano, Co-Founder and CEO of Morgan Creek Digital, recorded an interview Friday October 4th with Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of Ripple. Both of these men are highly influential figures in the crypto space, each with 10's of thousands of followers on Twitter. The interview was released to the public Wednesday the 9th.

Pomp (Anthony's nickname) is known as a Bitcoin maximalist, meaning that he is pro-BTC until the cows come home. Pomp does not see another digital asset taking the top spot in market cap that Bitcoin is currently occupying. Garlinghouse is biased towards the success of the Ripple / XRP ecosystem just as any other CEO would be in his position.

Off the Chain podcast on Spotify

Garlinghouse went in cold as he did not know any of the questions Pomp would ask prior to the interview. A few days before the interview took place, Pomp posted a series of tweets to ask the crypto community what he should ask Garlinghouse during the 90 minutes they would spend together. Of course, as the XRP community does, they voiced their questions with no hesitation.

Both Pomp and Garlinghouse were very cordial and definitely displayed a level of respect for one another all the way through the end. It sounded like a friendly conversation as they discussed Brad's work history at AOL and Yahoo!, as well as when he got the call to come on-board with Ripple while he was driving for Uber.

Off the Chain podcast on Spotify

To listen to the podcast on Spotify, go here.

My thoughts on the interview

I think that the interview was quite informative for those who aren't quite familiar with the Ripple / XRP ecosystem. For those of us who are on Twitter every day viewing the latest updates and interviews, Brads remarks were not covering new ground. This is because Brad is transparent when he speaks of Ripple and does not hide any information that is not confidential.

The part many people, including myself, were looking forward to the most was finding out if Pomp had changed his mind in regards to XRP. Does he now see it as a viable asset moving into the future? He basically gave a generic answer that didn't really leave the XRP community satisfied. In the end, he still sides with Bitcoin even though XRPL's technology is faster and extremely cost efficient.

I did see some remarks on Twitter afterwards from XRP community members stating this: If Pomp denounced Bitcoin and admitted that XRP was superior, then his entire brand that he has built for years around Bitcoin would crumble. I definitely agree with that notion. Pomp also states that he does not own any other crypto besides Bitcoin which doesn't really make much sense to me. Who knows what Pomp truly thinks about XRP. Perhaps we will find out one day.

What's funny is that Garlinghouse is pro Bitcoin. He owns Bitcoin and says during the interview that he “longs Bitcoin”. Garlinghouse wants all boats to rise, not just Ripple and XRP. I think that is a really impressive quality to have as a top leader in the digital asset space. It is nice to see that Brad is not bashing other coins or projects. He wants these projects to solve real-world problems that help real people.

The interview was one of the best I have heard and I definitely recommend giving it a listen on your favorite podcast app. Again, if your finger is on the pulse of all things XRP, then you won't be surprised by much that is said during this interview. On the other hand, if you are relatively new to the company, Ripple, or the digital asset, XRP, by all means put on a pair of headphones and go to town.

Sandra “My experience with Coil Blogging [Club] has been absolutely amazing!! It gives me the drive to post every day and interact with other group members, which have been supportive and helpful along this journey!!”

Miguel “My experience with Coil has been interesting as this is my first time blogging. Obviously there are features missing that I hope will get implemented in due time, but overall it has been fun and I really like the idea of paying content-creators as you consume.”

Last but not least...

Nickel “Mash potatoes and gravy!!”

________________________________________________________

Had to save the laugh for last. Nickel truly does enjoy his time spent with other CBC members and is glad he joined the club. He is also a talented guitarist and singer that the group enjoys listening to. New members have joined since those responses were given, so I will do another post in the near future with additional member reviews.

Support and encouragement have been the 2 most important aspects of the group since the beginning. It is evident that the CBC is making a real difference in the lives of Coil bloggers across the globe. If you would like to get involved with a passionate group of Coil creators, feel free to send a DM on Twitter for more information.

Cinnamon is a game-changing new subscription-based video content platform that rewards content creators instantly and more fairly than other platforms.

I love new technologies. Especially when those technologies involve content creators. Today an announcement was made that Cinnamon is officially live to the public. Before the announcement, they were only letting a small group of creators in to test the platform in “preview” version of the site.

Cinnamon's revenue model is very different from YouTube's model in that it doesn't rely on advertisements. Instead, it runs based on a Web Monetization subscription model that rewards content creators right away via streaming payments instead of having to wait days or even weeks to receive the funds.

Cinnamon official email

Now that the platform is open to the public, it is easier than ever to get started. First, you need a Coil account. Then, you use that Coil account to sign into Cinnamon. The reason for this is because Cinnamon imports your Coil profile so you can then get paid to straight to the payment pointer you already set up.

Cinnamon works like Coil in that it incorporates Web Monetization. If you, as a Coil subscriber, view a video on Cinnamon, then that Cinnamon video creator gets paid in micropayments via Interledger just like on Coil. In other words, Cinnamon is like Coil, except with video as the primary content source instead of blogs.

Cinnamon.video

The Cinnamon interface is so easy to navigate that even your grandma could upload her own videos. Editing a profile can be done in a few clicks and does not feel any different than other content sites you are used to using. Hit the “+” button at the top right of the screen to begin uploading a video.

A unique feature inside of Cinnamon is called hype. To me, hype is similar to hitting the like button on YouTube. The more hype a video receives, the more popular or trendy it is considered to be. A couple honorable mentions are comments and search. For a brand new platform, adding those features is a huge step forward in the overall development timeline.

Interested in giving Cinnamon a try? Jump onto a browser on your laptop and sign in with your Coil profile. If you have videos that you previously posted on YouTube or Vimeo and that are relevant to your current brand (personal or professional), definitely feel free to upload those to Cinnamon.

I know, I know. This question has been burning in your mind ever since you started blogging either on Coil.com or on your own website utilizing the Web Monetization API. What exactly happens when a Coil subscriber views the blog post(s) that you spent time pouring your blood, sweat, and tears into?

First off, Coil is a community. Bloggers sharing their lives, their knowledge, and their expertise is the culture that has been formed here. It is important, even as a content creator, to help support the Coil ecosystem by subscribing to the monthly subscription service.

Subscribing to Coil demonstrates your commitment to the community and to the overall success of Web Monetization. You are supporting fellow creators and unlocking the ability to see subscriber-only content which is an incredible feature on this platform.

Go to your settings and spend a “cup of coffee” worth for an entire month subscription.

What happens when a subscriber views your content?

Lets begin by saying that your posts do not have a timeline. Meaning, with Web Monetization, or WM, payouts happen in real-time no matter when the post was published. A subscriber could be reading your post that you published a year or even 2 years ago, and you would still get paid when a subscriber consumes the content.

Step 1 - Browsing your content or your profile page

In order for you as the creator to get paid on Coil.com, an active subscriber needs to be browsing 1 of 2 things... your individual blog post or your profile page. A subscriber who visits either of those areas will cause micropayments to be channeled into your account, whether that be XRP or fiat currency.

Tip: Coil.com has built-in Web Monetization, meaning that you do not need to have the Coil plugin installed on your browser to support the creator, you just need to be logged into your Coil account with an active subscription in place.

On the other hand, if a subscriber is visiting a site other than Coil.com that has the WM API installed, then the Coil plugin is required to support that creator.

Step 2 – WM and Interledger (ILP) routing

As a subscriber is viewing and/or browsing your content, WM is working in the background, calculating the amount of micropayments (small but they add up quickly) to send to your Interledger address, or payment pointer. Think of an Interledger payment pointer like an email address, except that it routes value instead of information.

The Interledger address assigned to you tells the WM API where to send the payment to. For instance, if you choose to receive your payments via the digital asset, XRP, then your payment pointer will include the XRP Tip Bot Interledger address which looks like this:

Example: $coil.xrptipbot.com/wJYC0D0IO1ubUCF7_owtbg

Again, much like an email address that routes data to a specific account, payments need a pointer to tell them which account to funnel into. The XRP Tip Bot is compatible with Interledger which allows payments from Web Monetization to be sent there.

Step 3: “Travis...there is no option C” – The Rock inThe Rundown

Usually I like to end steps or lists with odd numbers like 3 or 5. In this case, we are basically done here, so I will use this step as a wrap up step. What you see on Coil.com is what is called a “front-end”. It is the pretty coat of paint that you see on the outside of a beautiful new car.

The “back-end” is what you don't see. The thousands upon thousands of lines of code that have been put in place not only for Coil.com, but also for Web Monetization and Interledger combined. What you see on the blogs is nothing compared to what is happening behind the scenes, and for most, I'd say that is perfectly fine.

Are you confused yet? No worries. If all you want to do is create content and check your XRP Tip Bot account once a week, go right ahead. No problem at all. But, if you are a bit nerdy like me who wants to know the intimate details of how things work, then hopefully this article gave you some decent insight.

The XRP ecosystem has been inundated with breaking news over the last couple of weeks. My favorite piece of news came from Xpring, a payments platform for developers who announced the roll-out of their new website in addition to new branding on their social pages such as Twitter and Coil. If you haven't had a chance to take a look at the site, feel free to open it up in a new tab and follow along.

Xpring Platform provides developer tools, services, and programs to integrate money into your apps.

The Internet of Value, where money moves as easily as information does, is being built through multiple channels. One of those channels is RippleNet which provides financial institutions access to on-demand liquidity via the digital asset, XRP. Xpring is an additional channel that Ripple is utilizing to increase the number of use cases for the technology built around payments.

Lets take a look at the core technology that Xpring integrates into their platform to aid developers across the globe.

Photo cred: Xpring.io

The above photo gets me extremely excited. It's one of those things that can keep people up at night. The amount of impact these technologies are having and will have on furthering the Internet of Value is mind-boggling. Let's start with the XRP Ledger, or XRPL for short.

The XRP Ledger provides an open, peer-to-peer, decentralized network to move value in less than 5 seconds. It verifies the order of transactions using an algorithm called consensus. Think of the XRPL as the highway and XRP as the cars (except the cars are traveling at earth-shattering speeds).

Interledger (ILP) is an open protocol suite that provides a means for value to be routed from one ledger to another, even if they are completely different. For example, a sender sends 10 dollars to a receiver who wants it in XRP. ILP is blockchain agnostic and bridges walled gardens, making value accessible to anyone on any payment system. Interledger is a BIG DEAL.

Web Monetization is an open standard for creators to get paid via micropayments. This model is much different from existing monetization models such as ad-placement, paywalls, and data sell-offs. The great part about WM is that creators get paid instantly when subscribers consume their content. No waiting required.

Xpring is aimed at helping developers integrate payments into their existing or newly created apps using the above technologies. The Xpring Platform is going to help attract well-versed developers from all across the globe who want to participate in the payments movement.

Photo cred: @xpringdev on Twitter

The website goes on to showcase exactly how developers can get involved with the platform, displaying a myriad of tools and resources to immediately dive into. A few of the tools that are available to play around with are:

  1. Xpring SDK – to start building
  2. Network explorer – to browse XRP/ILP networks
  3. XRP Testnet – to test apps with current XRPL version
  4. ILP Testnet – to test apps on current ILP version

Use Cases

Three main use cases come into play when discussing use cases with Xpring and the Internet of Value.

1. Wallets and Exchanges

Exchanges are able to add XRP, the ultimate bridge currency, to their lineup of digital assets. Not only that, but developers can create wallets that allows for sending, receiving, and storing of XRP. All the tools neccessary to build are provided by Xpring.

2. Content

The big component when it comes to content is Web Monetization as mentioned earlier. This web standard allows for content creators such as bloggers, podcasters, musicians, and so on, earn revenue when subscribers consume their content.

3. Gaming

The gaming industry is getting a make-over since gamers are now able to own their in-game assets. Gone are the days of imaginary coins such as on Mario Bros. We are now dealing with real money which is quite revolutionary.

Photo by Ugur Akdemir on Unsplash

What I personally feel is valuable on the site is the Frequently Asked Questions page. The FAQ page goes more in-depth on topics such as XRP, the XRPL, Interledger, and so on, to give developers and enthusiasts a sweeter taste of the ecosystem's components.

Overall, the Xpring team did an incredible job putting this website and other social channels together. Right now is the perfect time to start getting involved either as a developer or as a content creator. Enter into the amazing world of cutting-edge payments made possible by XRPL, ILP, and Web Monetzation.

Thank you for joining me on this excursion through the Xpring website. A lot more information is held on the site itself so definitely go take a look. If you have further questions or would like to get in contact with the Xpring team, feel free to send them an email at contactxpring@ripple.com.
