Tuned into the Peacock, waiting for the Football Night in America Preview Show ahead of tonight's NFL Preseason game between the LA Chargers and the Detroit Lions.
I'm not a particular fan of either of these teams, neither am I a particular fan of the NFL, but I LOVE football. Always have. I played on school teams from grade school, through middle school, and all the way through high school.

My next long read
After a cursory look through the new books and book sets at Amazon, I decided my time will better spent reading some of the collections that have already been downloaded to my Kindle, but haven't yet been read. First up will be OZ: The Complete Collection by L. Frank Baum.
Including all 14 of the OZ novels he wrote and supplemental material, this should provide a light, comfortable read, and a nice diversion from events out there in the real world of 2025,

What shall I read next?
This afternoon I finished the final novel in a 23-book set that I've been enjoying for awhile. Now comes the task of choosing my next long read. In recent years my taste in fiction has mostly included urban fantasy, horror, and military sci/fi. Think I'll devote part of tomorrow to choosing. Lord knows there's plenty to choose from at Amazon in any of those genres for zero cost or close to it.

Light of the World
I've had the classic Light of the World by Dom Benedict Baur, O.S.B.. on my shelf for a number of years and have used it occasionally. This book of daily meditations based on the day's Mass readings according to the traditional Catholic liturgical calendar is really quite excellent. Today I pulled it off the shelf and added it to my daily prayer and meditations regimen.

Three things:
Increasingly over the last few months or so, I've been enjoying what I suspect are AI generated music / video collections. The piece I'm listening to at the moment is called “City Night Jazz Noir Vibes” and it's from a larger collection called “Noir Jazz Vibes.” The ability to listen to music I like without commercial interruption makes paying for YouTube Premium worth the monthly hit.
I lucked out with my sports follows today. Caught several hours of coverage of today's final stage of the Tour de France. Exciting! And my Indiana Fever beat the Chicago Sky this afternoon, even playing without Caitlin Clark. GO FEVER!
And I'm this close (pinching my thumb and forefinger together) to consigning an old laptop to my graveyard of dead computers. It's a good fifteen years old, so it's time.
And the adventure, it does continue.

Early Saturday evening finds me listening to my Texas Rangers playing against the Atlanta Braves, and reflecting on my injured right shoulder that came from yesterday morning's fall in the front yard.
It has been ~ 36 hours since that fall. Enough time has now passed that I can compare it to a similar injury to my left shoulder 3 or 4 decades ago. That injury to my left shoulder was a broken collar bone as a result of a bicycle crash. The pain, soreness, and weakness now in my right shoulder is very similar to what accompanied that broken left collar bone decades ago. No, I haven't been to a doctor with this right shoulder situation. What would be the point? I know how to nurse it back to health. As long as I rest it as much as possible, which is easy since I'm fully retired and basically homebound, I'll just lay low and let nature take its course.
And the adventure continues.

So this morning I fell in the front yard.
It was very early. I'd helped the wife load some supplies into her car. She handed me a bottle of water from her front seat and asked me to put it on her rose bush as she backed out of the driveway. I walked over to the flower bed and....PLOP... down I went.
Dang it! From where I lay on the grass I was able to turn my head and saw her driving away down the street going to work.
Took me a few painful minutes to collect myself, stand up, and head into the house. I've been taking Tylenol, and the wife rubbed pain cream into my right shoulder after she got back home. That helps. but this darned shoulder and my right arm and hand are still weak and sore. Given how slowly I heal these days, I imagine that aggravation will be with me through the weekend.
So,... how's your weekend going so far? Is everybody having fun?

The weather's been really hot again today. Temps. have been at 100 degrees or better almost all day long, so I've only ventured outside a couple of quick times taking trash to the bins. Luckily I love to read, and I've been doing lots of that.
I'm half an hour away from tonight's Indiana Fever game. Though it looks like Caitlin Clark won't be playing again tonight, the Fever are still a darned good team even without her. Granted, when she's healed up and back in action, it'll be way more fun to follow them. GO FEVER!
And the adventure continues.

Too tired tonight to follow the Rangers / A's Game which has just started.
So instead, I'll continue listening to The Joe Pags Show for a few more minutes before putting head to pillow.

Earlier today a friend asked how my tournament games were going.

The graphic above shows the final board of a game I won this afternoon playing Black. My Rook to g7 checkmated the White King and ended the game.
CC (Correspondence Chess) games rarely end by checkmate. Most often the losing player will realize at some point that he has no clear path forward and he'll resign the game, giving his opponent the win by default, and giving both him and his opponent more time to focus on their other games. As most of us usually have many active games in progress at any one time, that's simply the polite thing to do.
As I told my friend this morning, I'm playing as I normally do: wining some, losing some more.
And the adventure continues.
