“America’s most racist sheriff”

Tucson, AZ – Regarding the August 25 pardon that President Trump gave to the ex-sheriff Joe Arpaio, Stteffanny Cott from the Tucson immigrant rights action group L.U.P.E. said, “The truth is Sheriff Joe Arpaio, America’s most racist sheriff, used the Sheriff Department of Maricopa County to racially profile Latino and Chicano communities and violently contributed to the criminalization of immigrants and the separation of working class families.”

Phoenix, AZ – Thousands have gathered in downtown Phoenix to protest the presence of xenophobic President Trump. Led by the immigrant rights organization Puente, organizations have poured into the capital to refuse Trump’s pardon of the notorious Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Arpaio is infamous for his enthusiastic and vicious implementation of Arizona’s racist, anti-immigrant SB1070. Recently, Arpaio was found guilty of contempt of court by a federal judge and faces up to six months in prison – unless he receives a pardon from Trump.

Detroit, MI – Palestinian American icon Rasmea Odeh made her final court appearance in Detroit on August 17. Odeh knew the sentence before she arrived. The defense and prosecution agreed to a sentence of removal from the U.S., and Judge Gerswhin Drain approved. Odeh was looking forward to making her public statement before the court.

On August 3, Freedom Road Socialist Organization leader Masao Suzuki condemned president Donald Trump for endorsing the racist and anti-immigrant bill called the “RAISE Act,” sponsored by Republican Senators Cotton (R-AR) and Purdue (R-GA). Trump said that the bill would cut legal immigration by one-half by slashing visas for non-English speaking and non-college educated immigrants, and by restricting family reunification. RAISE is an acronym for “Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment Act.”

Group photo of activists with MIRAC and Unlawful Assembly marching band

Albert Lea, MN – On July 9, activists with the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee and the Unlawful Assembly marching band traveled in a caravan from Minneapolis to the Freeborn County Jail in Albert Lea an hour and a half south of the Twin Cities. They assembled with banners, chants and music to protest the county’s contract with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and offer moral support and uplifting music to ICE detainees and other inmates inside the detention center.
