Boyle Heights continues demanding Justice for Jesse Romero

Mother and Aunt of Jesse Romero, as well as Sol Marquez of Centro CSO.

Los Angeles, CA – Protesters continue demanding justice for 14-year-old Jesse Romero. Romero was shot and killed by LAPD the evening of Aug. 9. Protesters rallied on Wednesday night, Aug. 10, at the site of his murder. On Saturday, Aug. 15, protesters lined up at the steps of the LAPD Hollenbeck Police Station in Boyle Heights. The family of Jesse Romero, with Centro CSO (Community Service Organization), is demanding a stop to the police killings of young Chicanos in the neighborhood and justice for Jesse Romero. Romero is the fifth person killed by LAPD this year in Boyle Heights.

Milwaukee vigil at the scene of the police shooting of Sylville Smith

Milwaukee, WI – The response to the Aug. 13 police killing of a young African American man is continuing here. At 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14, over 100 community members showed up for a community cleanup called for by the Coalition for Justice.

Los Ángeles, CA – La noche del 10 de agosto, cientos de personas se reunieron en el corazón de la comunidad de Boyle Heights, entre Breed St. y Cesar Chavez Ave, para exigir que se haga justica por el asesinato de Jesse Romero, el joven de apenas 14 años de edad que fue abatido a tiros la noche anterior por la policía de Los Ángeles (LAPD por sus siglas en ingles). El incidente ocurrió luego de que el LAPD detuviera al joven por hacer grafiti. Jesse Romero es la quinta persona y el segundo menor, asesinado este año por el LAPD en Boyle Heights; el LAPD ya lleva 12 asesinatos en la ciudad de Los Ángeles en tan solo este año.

Milwaukee, WI – The Sherman Park neighborhood became the scene of a Ferguson-like uprising after a police killing of a Black man on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 13. At 3:30 p.m., a Milwaukee cop shot and killed a 23-year-old man they said was running away from them, near 44th and Auer Avenue. Police immediately issued statements claiming they recovered a stolen gun.

Los Angeles, CA – On the evening of Aug. 10, hundreds gathered in the heart of Boyle Heights at Breed Street and Cesar Chavez Avenue, demanding justice for Jesse Romero. 14-year-old Jesse Romero was gunned down by LAPD on evening of Aug. 9. The LAPD initiated the incident due to graffiti. Jesse Romero was the fifth person, and second child, murdered by LAPD in Boyle Heights this year. He was the 12th person this year in Los Angeles to be murdered by LAPD.

Speaker at Utah rally addresses the recent attacks on the Fourth Amendment

Salt Lake City, UT – Utah activists rallied at Washington Square, July 31, to address the recent attacks on the Fourth Amendment and demand a Community Controlled Police Review Board to curb police crimes. Organizers called the rally in response to the Supreme Court decision in Strieff v. Utah, which makes it legal for the state to prosecute individuals using illegally obtained evidence.

Jacksonville, FL – On Aug. 30, the people of Jacksonville will vote on a referendum calling for a half-penny sales tax to pay for the city's troubled Police and Fire Pension Fund (PFPF). The referendum, proposed by Mayor Lenny Curry, extends an existing sales tax for up to 30 years beyond its scheduled end in 2030. Curry and other supporters claim the sales tax extension will go towards paying down the city's $2.87 billion debt owed to the fund.

‘I don’t know’ is not enough!

North Miami, FL- About 50 activists and members of the North Miami community gathered at the North Miami Police Department, July 25, to protest the recent shooting Charles Kinsey. Protesters held signs that read, “Fire and jail all (wannabe) killer cops,” and “All lives will matter when Black lives do.” The protest included an hour long sit-in inside the police station, where they demanded answers for the attack on Charles Kinsey.

Milwaukee, WI – Over 400 people showed up to Milwaukee’s Red Arrow Park at 4 p.m., July 11 in response to the recent murders of Black men by police. Organized and led by the Coalition for Justice, protesters marched through the streets of downtown Milwaukee. They paused at various locations to send a clear message to Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) and the city: “Black lives matter!”

Salt Lake City protest against police violence, for community control

Salt Lake City, UT – Outraged at police violence across the nation, about 500 people took to the streets in the state’s capitol city to protest July 9. They stood together to raise their voices in mourning for Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, and against the brutality that police have used to tear apart communities from Ferguson to Baton Rouge, Baltimore and Salt Lake City.
