Roscoe's Quick Notes

my micro-blog

Sunday ends peacefully and quietly. I like that.

Tonight isn't supposed to be too cold, so I won't bother setting up the space heater. Tomorrow a 2nd heater is scheduled to arrive. so I'll have two to set up when the really cold nights arrive later this week.

Thought for today from Archbishop Lefebvre : “We need to have certain essential, fundamental dispositions if we are going to obtain that special grace of entering the mystery of Christ: of loving Him and living His life. We need to be a soul of desire; we need to have a firm will to know our Lord, to love Him, to enter that mystery which is going to include the cross. To the degree that our Lord wills to reveal His own mystery to us, to that degree also does He place the cross on our shoulders. And therefore many souls hesitate to give themselves completely to our Lord because there is a kind of fear of perfection, a fear of holiness.

Saturday evening finds me busy, and thankful.

I'm busy with three main projects at the moment: 1.) an increase in the number of my ongoing correspondence chess games, 2.) setting up small ceramic space heaters to use this Fall and Winter rather than the big gas furnace that supplies central heating here at home and, 3.) the rehabilitation of my wonky hips. Work on these projects fills my schedule completely every day.

And I'm thankful for having my time so occupied with worthwhile projects.

Thought for today from Archbishop Lefebvre : “Throughout the Old Testament, we can see that God was thinking of the Blessed Virgin. Already, immediately after the sin of Adam and Eve, God said to the serpent, “I will put enmities between thee and the woman; ...she shall crush thy head” (Gen. 3:15). So the Virgin Mary was already present in the mind of God.”

This Friday evening finds me winding down to the radio call of a college basketball game. It's been my good fortune to find college games most evenings and many afternoons this week. Good entertainment.

Have been prepping for this winter by investing in ceramic space heaters. Rather than heating the whole house with the central heating as we've done since moving into this house 10 years ago, we'll just heat those rooms we live in as we live in them. Supposedly this will save us lots of money.

Thought for the day from Archbishop Lefebvre – “Christian families, you represent the Church, be convinced of it. Your families contain a wellspring of supernatural faith, of graces, of blessings of God, which is absolutely evident. So it is a great hope; I would even say it is the only hope; I see no other. It is therefore you, dear Christian parents, who are truly the wellspring of the Church, and we congratulate you. Continue. For pity's sake, continue. Take it to heart to give your children the profoundly Christian formation which you yourselves received”

Love these early college basketball games! I've just tuned into the St. John's Red Storm vs the North Texas Mean Green, already at half time. And I'm confident to be able to find more games throughout the day.

Last night's sleep was uncomfortable. Tossing and turning up with insomnia breaks. At no surprise, the hips have been more painful and wonky today than they've been recently.

Thought for the day from Archbishop Lefebvre – “The sanctifying grace of Jesus is such a unique and abundant source of salvation that it is rightly called by a name proper to our Lord: Gratia capitis, the grace of the leader or of the head – making perfectly clear at the same time that in all salutary action and in all action which concerns the spiritual good, everything ultimately comes from and returns to Jesus Christ alone, the Son of God incarnate.”

One fast Wednesday, this, in the middle of one fast week.

As the hips slowly heal, my concern now is focused on my gas furnace. As the weather begins to cool, the darned furnace appears to be on the verge of failure. Something in the electronics of it, it seems. When the central air runs everything is normal, but when I switch it over to heat, not so much. It'll run as normal for awhile, shut down as it should, but when the thermostat tells it to fire up again...

It doesn't. Not always. Instead I hear an electronic hum. Then when I shut it down at the fuse box and let it sit for awhile. It seems to recover. Then I turn it back on and it runs okay for awhile, shuts down when it should. Then instead of starting up again it just gives the electronic hum.

This Tuesday has been another good one for me, another day spent entirely without using a walking stick. Of course, had I left home I'd have kept one with me. My stride is still not normal, sometimes more shuffle, sometimes more stagger, and the occasional hitch in my hips still happens. but I'm no longer doubled-over in pain. And when here at home there's always something sturdy to lean on. Progress continues.
