NEA Game Fest Friday and Saturday, October 12 and 13

The NEA Gamers Guild is putting on a big game festival as I write. It is being held in the Hoxie Community Center in Hoxie, Arkansas. All kinds of games are being played from table top to RPGs. There are tournaments. There are prizes. There is food.

The event is a fundraiser for the Childrens Shelter. So go have some fun and donate to a good cause at the same time.

Here's the Facebook event page.

Four of my kids are helping with this event. I'm going Saturday to play some Dungeons and Dragons in a 12 hour, jump in, jump out, RPG session. Come and quest with me. We'll kill some monsters and find some treasure. I love playing DnD.

ASU Jazz Concert Tonight

I cancelled today's Hairy Larry's Merry Pranksters rehearsal so I could attend the ASU Jazz Concert tonight at the Fowler Center. I could have done both but not and have supper too and I really like to eat. Besides with the whole Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday thing this week I already had too much on my plate. Do you see what I did there? I like to eat but I don't like too much on my plate.

The concert tonight has two big bands playing, the Lab Band and the ASU Jazz Orchestra. Always a good time. I see my friends in the audience and on the stage. The music is great. And it's free. Come if you can.

I also want to give a shout out to Oliver Prehn for his New Jazz tutorials on Youtube. He has a lot of them and all his lessons are free. His theory is sound but he teaches technique first and then explains the theory. I'm a theory gear head but not everyone is into that so I appreciate Oliver's approach.

Here's the video I found today. It's the start of a series. Once he gets a hold of me I have to continue. I can't stop learning from him.

Left hand chords: “minor 7” and “suspended” chord progressions https://youtu.be/eqZoKKnf9i8

So if, like me, you are obsessed with jazz piano check out his videos.

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday

Today is Wednesday and I lead the Praise Band at the Brookland United Methodist Church Ignite Service. This is a contemporary worship service with a large youth attendance. My ministry is to teach those who are interested in playing in the Praise Band. So some weeks I'm covered with students and some weeks I have none. Our pianist, Jackie, helps me with this. Everyone is welcome. We eat at 6:00 and the service starts at 7:00.

Thursday at 7:30 the ASU jazz bands will be playing at the Fowler Center. I won't be playing at this concert but I attend all the jazz concerts whether I'm playing or not. Why not? It's free and it's great music. And those are my friends up on the stage.

Friday I will be going to the NEA Game Fest in Hoxie, Arkansas. “NEA Game Fest will feature open gaming, game demos, board games, RPGs, miniature games, tournaments and more.”

It's a charity event. “The NEA Gamers Guild is excited to be able to run this convention and bring awareness to The Children's Shelter. We hope you join us in 2018!”

It's my kids putting on this event. With lots of help of course. So it's a family thing to me.

So that's the story of my life. It's good to be busy.

I'm adding Bandcamp music to MixRemix Radio.

In particular I am looking for Creative Commons licensed jazz and blues. And I'm finding it too. I do a google search like this.

site:bandcamp.com “some rights reserved” jazz “name your price”

Or I just put whatever genre I'm looking for in there.

Of course a lot of people tag there music jazz when it's not really jazz. Still, if it's good music I add it. Even electronica. I just shy away from the really droney electronica.

You can listen to MixRemix Radio here.

Besides Creative Commons music I play concerts from http://archive.org so if you've got something for MixRemix Radio get in touch.

Email hairylarry@deltaboogie.com.

Thanks.

Delta Legends – Live at The Biscuit – October 5, 2018

I got good recordings of the Delta Legends set at The Biscuit last Friday. I'm really happy with them. We each sang one. Then we had Guest Legend, Jeffrey T., on harmonica, giving us duos and trios on the blues harp. As Jeremy said, “The Helena Philharmonica.” Guest Legends Rhode Island Red and Pinky Lee helped us close the show with a couple of Emporium Orkestra favorites.

It's nice to hear the audience shouting, screaming, and whistling at the end of each song.

I did a tricky little thing and layered my closing credits over an instrumental “Killing Floor”, for an outtro. But that's the only edits for the whole set. What we played is what you hear.

Here's the link to the show on the Live Music Archive.

Spaceman Bassman sent me a message today and he's sending me the raw video he shot of the show. So hopefully we'll have a few Delta Legends Youtube videos soon.

Here's the liner notes.

Still recuperating.

Ok, I'm old. It takes more than two days to recover from going to Helena, camping, and playing six sets. Mostly I've been reading and napping. Brandon Sanderson. “The Way Of Kings”. Yes, it's good.

I did listen to the Delta Legends set yesterday. I was laying on the bed while I listened but I didn't fall asleep. It's good too. Guest Legend on the blues harp, Jeffrey T. fit in well with Jeremy and me. How many times do you get to hear a blues quartet with three harmonicas? As Jeremy said, “It's the Philharmonica.”

The songs with Rhode Island Red and Pinky Lee are good too. I never played “Digging My Potatoes” on bass before. And John Shepherd played slide on my song, “My Sticks Always Getting In The Way”. Sounded great with the slide. Real 30s.

I hope to have the set posted to the Live Music Archive soon. Until then here's a link to the Delta Legends CD, “All Over Again”.

Enjoy!

I just got back from The Biscuit yesterday.

I camped at Fireman's Campground Wednesday and Thursday nights playing music around the campfire into the early morning hours.

The Emporium Orkestra played at the Downtown Bar and Grill Thursday, Friday, and Saturday mornings. And Delta Legends was on the Cedell Davis stage at 5:00 pm Friday. Rhode Island Red and Pinky Lee joined us for the last two songs and Spaceman Bassman shot video of the set with his tablet. I recorded audio of the Emporium Orkestra and Delta Legends on my Zoom.

Friday after the show I drove home and Saturday morning Vivian and I left at 7:00 am in order to be at the Downtown Bar and Grill by 9:30.

Anson Funderburg had breakfast their Friday and Saturday mornings. Wayne and Reba Russell came in to eat on Friday and sat at the bar right behind us. I introduced them as our backup singers.

When Vivian and I made our entrance, Saturday, I was grinning from ear to ear. The whole room exploded. “Vivian, Vivian.” It's been years since she's been to The Biscuit or to an Emporium Orkestra show. She was made to feel very welcome.

Then we went over to the campground to visit with friends and we left at 4:00 to get home before dark.

We used to go from Wednesday to Sunday but we're getting old. Not too old. We're planning on going again next year.

If you come to the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas, next October look us up. We're not hard to find.
